Outgoing SMTP Spam scanning

With the ever building blacklists out on the internet, it has become just about a necessity to have outgoing SMTP emails spam-checked before leaving your network.

We all know what a "time vampire" fighting this spam war can be, and when you have 10s of thousands of email users, just scanning for Antivirus is not enough, I want to proactively keep my organization off of spam blacklists.

Please add the ability to scan outbound SMTP traffic for spam.

    Smiles, other than having each email scanned by the CommTouch engine and the expression filter, is there any other anti-spam check that you would like to have run?

    Not that I can think of off hand, just hitting the spam detection engine and expression filter would be nice.

    Hi,
    these features are already there if you use the smtp proxy, just depends on which boxes you tick.

    That's what I always assumed because of the wording on the 'Relaying' tab, but the User's Manual makes it clear that the content scanning is done only by the AV.  A group of us "discovered" that several months ago when someone started a thread asking why the Astaro didn't prevent him from sending a standard SPAM message.

    if what you are saying is correct, then what does the details on the page of the image have added refer to? The image is from the smtp proxy page in the ASG setup.

    I am not sure what section of that image you are refering to specifically, but I do not see anything in that section that mentions what networks will be scanned.

    Here is the problem with scanning outgoing spam. Lets say you send a mail to another company with words business opportunity, spam engine might think of this as spam and tag the words spam to the outgoing message. It would be kind of embarrassing to have words spam attached to the subject line of the email. That is why most companies don't use spam engine for outbound mail, just some kind of authentication mechanism so you can look at your stats for the day and see why joe skippy is sending 1000 mails an hour.[:)]

    I would not want to tag the message as spam, I would want it quarantined.  Investigating users after the fact is too late, the whole point is to scan users who are already authorized to send email, I don't see this as a problem, I see this as a much needed feature for large corporations.

    Who will be incharge of going thru the mail. How about its sensitive HR information or even personal information?  How about a visiting VP is sending out email that now has to go through you and is delayed. Its just not that simple. However in your situation, it might be a legitimate need.[;)]

    Billybob is one crusty so-and-so! I don't know about other countries, but, here in the USA, not one company would take a risk with HR/personal information.

    The solution might be to bounce the email back to the sender with the reason for the rejection.

    Oh I can see one of them mails already. Your mail was tagged as spam and quarantined because of the following words...
    Tool handling
    weak performance
    No desire
    and my favourite, large package.[:D]

    The point is, all this information is in the headers of the email and is not broken down for everyday user to see so they can correct it.

    That is a might bit excessive, but Carlins 7 dirty words would be a good place to start.

    But seriously, no company wants to embarrass itself by allowing something that could be offensive to be sent to a customer or partner. There are just too many lawyers with not enough work.


    I like Bobs suggestion of an NDR to the sender stating that the message could not be delivered. Beats having to release all the messages manually just because "Im leaving early because my Astaro config has given me a really throbbing headache".

    But I beleive a copy of the email should be quarentined for the phone calls when the user wants to know "what was wrong my email".

    It would be a great feature if the Astaro would forward a copy every email sent to a single email address for archival purposes. I know exchange and others do it but us little guys can't afford that kind of budget and the really throbbing headache's that come with it.
