Does Astaro have these features I've listed....???

Hi,

I'm currently using ClarkConnect Community Edition at home but there a few things it can't do (as far as I can tell).  A few questions are

  • Is there an Astaro Community edition (e.g. free for home use)
  • Is there a way to build a GROUP which identifies devices (e.g. kids computers) such that you can ENABLE/DISABLE internet access in one hit for the group?  But, ensuring this takes into access web access too (issue with CC is that this doesn't cut web access as PCs go via the transparent proxy).  So can Astaro do an "all in one" disable all internet access for a GROUP including web & non-web traffic?
  • Time based internet access?  Can Astaro effectively carry out time based access specified at the GROUP level, but as per the question above, include access from a given device for both (a) web access - which would be going through a filtering proxy, and (b) non-web access such as Xbox traffic, in one hit?
  •  Are there free blacklist/content filter updates available?  (for ClarkConnect these cost extra)
  • Is there a way to get a report on internet usage (albeit web or non-web access) per each internal device (e.g. PC, Xbox etc) per day?  (CC doesn't have this, even with some of the round-robin-database addon's and all the reports they have I've still found nothing that gives me this simple internet usage per day per internal device)
  •  Just confirming Astaro can run a transparent web proxy (i.e. all internal devices get forced through the proxy) with content filtering?
  •  I assume Astaro would be easy to install on an old PC I have, using an ISO based approach?  And then Astaro would handle updating itself?
  •  Assume Astaro can be installed as a Linux distribution?  i.e. it's linux underneath?  which flavor of linux?

    1. Yes. Go to my.astaro.com to register for a free home-user license.
    Note that this will be restricted to 10 internal IPs traversing the firewall.

    However, if you want to participate in the current beta, testers will be given 25-IP home licenses at the end of the beta. See Up2Date Announcements for more info. (hurry as the beta may end fairly soon.)

    2. Yes.
    If you're using both PacketFilter rules AND the HTTP proxy, then you'd need to create a network group for all of those users, and a proxy profile, and disable both as needed.
    If your using the proxy OR packetfilter, then you'd just need to disable it in the one place.

    3. I think so. (I haven't tried it)

    4. Yes. AntiVirus (http & smtp), web content filtering, and spam filtering, all with updates, are both included in the home license.

    5. The accounting reporting will show top clients and top servers, for a day, or a week, etc. Also, you can receive reports via email each night, week, and/or month.

    6. Yes. 
    Also, the 7.4 betas add some https filtering as well, I believe.
    I believe you can't proxy ftp proxy in transparent mode however.

    7. It's easy to install, and is a CD ISO.
    A/V and Content Filter updates are automatic.
    You will receive an email when software updates are ready to be installed.
    Hopefully your 'old pc' is _at least_ a fast Pentium III with 512MB to 1GB RAM. 512MB is probably too low if you want to use the content filtering http proxy and/or antivirus. If you have a lot of traffic, then a CPU over 1GHz would be better as the accounting reporting might be too slow to work well interactively (the nightly reports will still work fine). I'd recommend at least a 20GB hard drive.

    8. It is based on (iirc Suse SLES) Linux, but it must be installed standalone. You can't install it on top of another Linux system, unless you're talking about in a VM.
    There are also VMWare images available for download if you wish to run it virtually.

    Other notes:
    v7 Hardware Compatibility List Especially pay attention to NIC chipsets..

    3. Yes, HTTP Profiles allow time-based filtering and blocking.

    5. Yes.  In fact, 'Reporting >> Web Security' allows you to see which internal IPs have accessed which domains and for how long.  If you want specific URLs, you can search in the 'Content Filter (HTTP)' log.

    tks Bob - I'll try tomorrow to have a look at the live demos (as I'm getting a blank page at the moment (http://www.astaro.com/demo/asg) so they seem down).  I am currently downloading the Beta, so not sure if that is the problem.

    Be interesting to hear back on my Beta questions in the previous post too..

    Yes, but to qualify for the 25-user license, you need to be an 'active' user in these forums, reporting bugs, or at least try to reproduce other people's bugs, etc.

    It'd be a new license, AFTER the beta period ends, good for at least a couple years.

    Sounds good, but you might want to add another 256MB or 512MB of RAM if you're going to use the content filter and/or A/V and/or email proxies.
    My home box was running fine with 512MB, but I only use PacketFilter, IPS, and SOCKS proxy.
