Affiliation Questions

Is Astaro affiliated with Motricity, Savvis, XO Communications, or IBM-1?

The reason that I ask is; I have been receiving numerous Echo Requests and DNS Queries from motricity and savvis servers. Because of this, I made some modifications to how the packets are handled. These modifications appeared to have prompted Echo Requests from XO Comm and IBM-1 servers.

The DNS Queries indicate that the servers think that my DNS server is a root server. It is not.

1) Does the ASG seek out servers from Motricity, Savvis, XO Comm, or IBM-1 in any form or fashion?

2) Has anyone else seen this activity?

3) Why would these servers be excessively sending this data: Questions: 1, no flags are set, Name: , Type: NS (Authoritive name server), Class: IN (0x0001), to my DNS server.

Do I have something misconfigured, or is someone up to something?

    Do you have Astaro pointing to that?

    Astaro will do DNS lookups for reporting, etc.

    Are your internal servers using the root servers for their lookups?

    Jim, when is it necessary for internal servers to use root servers for lookup?   I mean, outside of the CIA, why would I want to have DNS information faster than the few hours it might take for information to propagate around the world?

    If the resolvers do have the data in their cache or they are down, as a last resort, the root servers are queried.

    I thought that was pretty standard?

    How is it you know how the CIA have their DNS servers configured?

    Just a guess.  Did I get it right?

    Don't tell me - I'd probably wind up in a spy novel.

    PS Although I wasn't the engineer who set them up, I know we never configured a DNS server to look beyond ISPs.
