DNS setup

Howdy all:

I have a static IP address on my cable line at home and want to use a real domain name instead of the dyndns. Dont get me wrong the dyndns feature is great, but I would like something a bit more me =P

Anyway, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as far as setting this up. I have a domain name, I have a DNS server on the inside of my ASG. That is where I need some help. What do I need to do to use the DNS server on the inside of my ASG. Am I even doing this right? Do I need a stand alone DNS server? I only booted it for this project. 

The goal is to be able to use the VPN client with a fully qualified domain name instead of the blah.blah.blah you get with Dyndns.

    Hi.

    You can set your inside DNS by setting it in "Network > DNS > Forwarders" in the Astaro configuration page.

    But starting a private DNS just to be able to use a VPN client is a lot of work.
    As mentionned, you can use DynDNs services (dynamic -with dyndns domain- or static -with our own domain name-), and/or maybe the DNS services of your domain name provider.

    Thanks for the feedback Jam. I'll probably just pay the $27 a year for custom DNS from dyndns. I'm cheap and was hoping to avoid that because this is nothing more than the connection to my house =P

    With a static address, you can get a cheap bundle from no-ip.com: they'll provide both a domain registration and "plus" account (which can be updated dynamically or set statically) for less than $33/yr.

    I've done more research; there are a TON of free services for hosting static and dynamic addresses, even if you've got a private domain registered elsewhere. The best value, however, seems to be when you do both registration and DNS with the same service.

    Jayson, if you are paying for a static IP address, your ISP probably includes DNS.  My guess is that you can register your domain name with your ISP and they will set up your DNS records for you.
