Configuration files between Astaro on different platforms

A question of curiosity.

For reliability reasons the firewall at our company is very important, so much so that if we have a hardware failure we'd be crippled if it failed. Therefore I'm forming the plan of having a cheap pc act as a fallback if the 220's hardware ever fails. (the replacement within 24 hours thing of the platinum support makes me a bit uncomfortable, i'd prefer they had a warehouse in the UK that had a guaranteed delivery time of within 4 hours)

I don't have the budget at the moment to buy two Astaro 220's, but what I do have is the idea that on the spare pc I could install ASG with a trial license and switch the cabling between the two if the firewall explodes, gets run over by elephants, becomes sentient and decides its existence has no meaning and commits suicide.

So, my question is if I copy over the config file from the 220 to a software version, are there any issues of doing this? Are there any gotchas?

Like I'd have to reconfigure the interfaces or something like that. (I'll actually be carrying out a test in vmware workstation at some point)


Of course, all this is highly unlikely since it's in a nice (relatively) dust free environment in an air conditioned server room.

    2 things:

    1) If you are moving the configuration from an 8 port device to, say, a 3 port PC, it will work as long as your configuration does not use any interfaces after the 3rd port on the 220.  So if your configuration say, uses ports eth0 and eth2 on the 220, you will need at least 3 NICs in the backup PC.  If you use the 8th port (some of my customers do, for instance), eth7, on the 220, you will need the backup PC to have at least 8 physical ethernet ports.  If you restore the configuration to another computer that does not have enough NICs to cover your configuration, any "extra" interfaces are just dropped out of the configuration.

    2) Trial License--the licensing info on an Astaro is stored with the configuration backup.  When you setup a new install of Astaro on that backup PC (which normally gives you 30 days from the date of install) and restore that 220 backup, it will attempt to use the 220 license... which will not work.  You will have to contact Astaro or your Reseller for a trial license... it would be best to discuss this with your reseller ahead of time.
