High Availability licensing

I'm trying to enable Active-Passive High-availability on my home network.  When I select Active-Passive I get a messsage saying that I have to have a valid license for this feature.  The FAQ implies that I only need to buy a subscription for the Active-Active configuration.  I have a free license that does not expire until 2010, but even the licensing page says that Cluster and Hot-stand-by are not licensed.  Do I have to buy a license to enable Active-Passive high-availability?

    Yes, High availability requires a license (passive / active or active / active).  It's probably not included in the home license as most home users would never need this feature.

    That's too bad.  Now I'm going to have to get balance working.  Oh well, learning is always a good thing.

    Are you sure you need HA?  HA is used when one has one or more Astaro units setup so that if one unit fails, the other one will come up and take over operations... it's also used for clustering operations in environments that need to process large amounts of traffic.  I can't imagine any true home network needing either of these features.

    If you are simply looking for the ability to failover to an alternate internet connection in the event the primary internet connection dies, that is built into the product, no additional license required.

    I may not need HA.  But yes, HA is exactly what I'm looking for.  I'm not looking for internet connection redundancy.  I currently have one Astaro system running on a VMWare ESXi server.  I want to configure a second on another computer running VMWare Server for failover.  I'm not sure what you mean by a true home network, but this is for my home network.  I tend to do a lot of testing of new things at home.  Redundant firewall/gateway/security appliance is next on the list.

    If you're evaluating the software for use in a business or other commercial purpose, a reseller can issue you a 30 day eval license for that feature so you can try it out.
