I was trying to help an end user get his Blackjack phone client working for outbound SMTP e-mail access to the MS Exchange server. In the process I think I've found a bug in the SMTP Relay Authentication.
1.) From my office outside Ben's network, and connecting through the external interface of the Astaro box, I could use MS Outlook 2003 via pop3 and smtp to connect and send out messages - no problem. However, I could not get Ben's Blackjack (on AT&T) to send out messages doing the same thing with identical POP3 and SMTP settings. We tried many different settings in the Blackjack to no avail.
Now at that point in time, the SMTP Relay Authentication was configured and enabled, but Ben was not on the SMTP relay authentication list though he did exist as a user in the Astaro.
So then we added Ben to the SMTP relay authentication list and changed his password to match his e-mail password. Success! At that point Ben's Blackjack was able to send SMTP e-mail. So isn't that weird? Ben could send out of Outlook whether he's SMTP relay authenticated or not, but not from his Blackjack phone using the same settings?
2.) After that, I spent some time playing around with Outlook and various SMTP Relay Authentication configurations. Interestingly whether Ben was on or off the relay list, and, with or without SMTP Relay Authentication checked, I could always send outbound e-mail as Ben via an off network Outlook client. This can't be working as designed can it, or am I missing something?
