Time and Date

Is system time on the hardware OK?
Is your clock battery OK?

I am almost sure it is not the hardware or clock battery as usually those things effect the time at startup not after its been up and running for a couple days. I am sure this has something to do with either a update or NTP. As it has happened a couple of times since and there had not been any reboots.

The concerns me because if I setup profiles with time restrictions there will be major problems.

Have you tried to use a different NTP server?

I have this on several systems and Astaro support has never supplied an answer. In my case they are older IBM PCs and my only recourse seems to be to find newer hardware that Astaro works on and I'm having more problems with that lately as well. Astaro seems to be headed to being an appliance company because while the older ASL seemed to run on anything I used the new ASG does not.

An added problem that you will see with this time problem is that time always jumps back and it seems to jump by hours and then NTP will not bring it forward because NTP doesn't do big adjustments well, it slowly brings it forward in most cases. When the system jumps back the preformance wil suffer greatly as the system tries to write log entries into areas where it has already done so. Even worse is if the system jumps back to a prior day such as from 1AM to say 10PM the prior day. At mid-night the system starts new log files and compresses the prior day's logs and the system is then trying to either write to files that don't exist or the compressed files, I don't know. The bottom line is that the system will get so busy doing this that you can't even login as root or admin because the login times out before it accepts a password. 

One added note that might help someone solve this. These jumps in time are something like the change you may see between telling a Linux system to use either UTC or Local time during an install. 

Sorry for the bad news but Astaro seems to only fall back on the HCL when pressed even though the same hardware worked back in V6.

Thanks Michael. I beleive you have hit the nail on the head. I am using am IBM, thought not that old. And have had all the problems you have described. I may have to reconsider purchasing the product if this is the case. As I am sure their "appliance" is equally as good as a PC, I need to be able to recover in hours not days if there is a hardware failure and running Astaro on a PC is the only way to achieve this. (We dont have the budget to buy a 2nd unit and keep it as a backup).

I will continue to monitor this problem to see if I can identify a single cause or exactly when this happens.
