Yes, it's definitely true that a more powerful computer helps, but you can do well with a 1XX series box if you set it up right.
Add some browsing exceptions for regularly visited sites. For example - cnn.com, espn.com, google.com and the like. Obviously sites where users post things wouldn't be great, but others are probably fine.
What have you implemented for e-mail scanning? You generally don't need to run every feature.
Are you running any VPN's?
And BTW - do confirm that you have a 512Mb box. I've seen some old stock ship from time to time so be sure.

if you set it up correctly..aka if you don't use everything the software offers...you have to setup exceptions to reduce the cpu load..etc etc etc....that's not a fix. The cpu in the 12x is too slow.
