Slowness

My clients have an ASG 120

They have a T1 and about 5 employees. Their internet is slow at times, as if they had a 56K modem. Only during certain times of the day.

They also have large amounts of junk mail being processed by their ASG through their pop accounts, to the tune of 800 a day. 

Is this slowness normal? I'm getting complaints from them.

    What version of ASL? How much RAM is in the 120? 
    IIRC, there have been 2 RAM configurations sold on the 120.

    If you have an older 120, and it's configured with 256MB of RAM, you need to contact the reseller and get it upgraded to 512MB.  Version 7, as well as Version 6 (IMHO) needs at least 512MB to run efficiently.  If the unit is running 512MB, make sure it's updated all the way to the current version, Version 7.201.  Also try disabling accounting (this option, in 7.201, can be found under Network/Accounting in WebAdmin); this can bog down these small boxes if they are processing a lot of traffic.If all this checks out, then you may just be killing the box, not due to the number of users, but possibly due to all the POP3 emails that are being processed.  I'd definitely start a support case with Astaro if none of this adds up.  It could also be that you just need to get faster hardware; consider upgrading to a standalone PC, P4 or better processor, 1GB of RAM and a 10 user corporate license (I don't think upgrading to a 220 would be a better deal in this case).  Your reseller should be able to help you with all of this.

    ram usage is not a value to pay attention to since ASL is Linux.  as long as swap is less than 10% you're fine.  The 120's issue is a slow cpu most times..although 256 megs of ram isn't nearly enough.

    Are you doing Anti-Virus on http or POP3?
    Single or Dual A/V?

    If dual, try single.

    yes I'm using http antivirus and pop

    I'm using single 

    there aren't that many users so I wouldn't think there would be so much slowness.

    I'm hoping I can fix this because I'm very wary of recommending this to any more clients.

    I would not recommend the 12x version to anyone.  Anytime i have tried one the cpu is very easy to overwhelm...either go one step up or use a low end dell, hp, etc, etc, etc, server.  any of those low end dell servers will handle your scenario without a problem.  I typically run over 1k e-mails a day through my astaro with most of the bells and whistles turned on.  I have another setup with 15 users on a p-4 1.8ghz with 768 megs of ram handling the same volume of mail but even more http traffic AND using the im blocker without incident.  Astaro is very highly memory and CPU dependent.

    Yes, it's definitely true that a more powerful computer helps, but you can do well with a 1XX series box if you set it up right.

    Add some browsing exceptions for regularly visited sites.  For example - cnn.com, espn.com, google.com and the like.  Obviously sites where users post things wouldn't be great, but others are probably fine.

    What have you implemented for e-mail scanning?  You generally don't need to run every feature.

    Are you running any VPN's?

    And BTW - do confirm that you have a 512Mb box.  I've seen some old stock ship from time to time so be sure.
