The information included covers VoIP security, IM/P2P, memory and CPU load and how to block an ASG.
The ASG configuration
Version v7.201.
The ASG has 3 active NICs, 2gb of shared memory, a dual CPU (1.9ghz 45w), 160gb sata drive. Web, ftp, socks, pop3 and smtp proxies are enabled, time managed web and packet filtering is active, 2 virus scanners, IM/P2P and VoIP security, as well as the user portal. The ASG currently is the time server, DHCP and DNS reference for most of the network devices. Logging is enabled. There 5 active PC/workstations along with a ATAs, 2 networked printers and the occasional laptop and wireless access point connected.
IM/P2P
1/. I have Skype and Tencent QQ blocked. About once or twice a week the daily reports show either Skype or Tencent QQ as being passed. I reported this during the beta testing of v7.2
Exceptions are not used in either setting.
2/. VoIP Security
I have VoIP security enabled and 2 ATAs operational, both configured to use the VoIP Security and QOS.
One registers calls in VoIP Security the other does not. Both use UDP 5060 to different destinations.
3/. Blocking an ASG
I have had this happen on 2 different ASGs I have built.
It involves building a Mandriva linux box using the 2008.0 powerpack. Again using 2 different motherboards. Both linux builds involve a Realtek NIC RLT8111/8169B. After the updates are applied to the linux box the problem does re-occur.
The setup is
Linux box mandriva 2008.0 -> netgear GS108 -> ASG v7.201 (Intel NIC PCI-ex).
Also hanging off the netgear is a linksys psus4 usb print server
The linux box drives the netgear switch into some form of overload causing it to block. The ASG does not respond even when the offending NIC is removed and the netgear switch reset. Restoration of network connectivity requires the ASG/GS108/PSUS4 all to be powered off and on. The offending NIC works correctly when connected through the Linksys psus4, before and after software upgrades.
The previous time I had this happen was when a previous ASG was using a Realtek onboard NIC (RTL8100C) and the linux box was using an onboard Realtek NIC.
4/. Memory usage and CPU occupancy
Over a period of a week or 2 the memory usage builds up from 20% to 40% and CPU occupancy grows from an average of under 1% to about 4%. When the ADSL service has a restart, the memory drops to about 30% and the CPU drops by about 1%. When a full restart occurs memory is 20% and CPU under 1%.
