Backup Contents? Documentation?

Is there a KB article or some sort of documentation the defines EXACTLY what is contained in a backup file? Is one truly able to take a backup file, restore it to an identical hw/sw setup and in fact have an exact duplicate of the system the backup file comes from? Customizations, and all? Meaning all of the x.conf-default files, etc.

    The hardware doesn't need to be identical, but the # of NICs should be the same or greater.

    Not sure on the other questions.

    The backups used to be .tar.bz2 files, e.g. you could open them with winzip or something like that, but they seem to be quite different in version 7.

    v7 uses a database (mysql) for much of the configuration, whereas previously it was mostly text-based config files.

    The backup will restore all the data that was in the SQL DB that holds all the configuration info for the unit, certificates, etc.  It will not restore configuration changes you make by hand in the shell (modifying .conf files, etc.), and it does not backup / restore quarantined emails or proxy cache items.
