Home user licence question, need answers!

Well, you're talking about circumventing a license agreement (trying the router trick)... so I don't think you'll find much help here...

However, you may not even need to try!

Just statically assign IP addresses to the devices that will not need the Internet, and do not set their DNS or Gateways to point at the Astaro, and they will not be counted.

Ok that may be an option, I didn't want to void the licence agreement I just need to figure out how to run more devices.

Yeah, you can stick them behind another router to have them avoid being counted, but yes, technically it could be counted as bypassing licensing restrictions.

However, if setting them up to work as Bruce mentions works for you, I would not worry about it and just do whatever is easiest for you since you are still complying to the spirit of the license, IMO.

Unfortunatey, you can't buy more home licenses. If you PM Bruce, he can tel you how much a license will cost.

They can't be purchased, only awarded, such as the beta testing term on the v7.1 code.

They don't offer any home licenses for sale; Astaro's focus is the commercial sector, not the home consumer market.  The Home User license (the 10 user free one) is just a good way to get people interested in the product, and for the "average" home, it's enough... it's certainly too complex a product for Joe Consumer to use, normally, 'cept us geeks...

The 25 user, 50 user Home licenses you may see some advertising in their sig lines were awarded by participation in a beta, etc.  They used to offer a "power user" home license a few years ago, but no more.

It never ceases to amaze me how many times people ask about home user licensing on this forum. A search of the forum would no doubt find numerous posts on this topic (for every version that has been released, I might add).
The home user license is free and allows for ten IP addresses ~ period ~ get used to it!
In v7.x you even get all of the AV and anti-spam stuff for free too. Not too bad in my opinion. Who says you get nothing for nothing these days? Try to be happy with what you get for nothing…

My understanding of the license agreement is that it is the amount of IP addresses that actually pass through the firewall out to the big wide world that are counted. Using a switch within your internal network should not be an issue for non internet accessing machines/devices; they are not actually using the firewall. [;)]

I agree.. granted I only use the home license (10 ip's) I'm very satisfied with this product.  I can't think of any other company that gives you IPS, antivirus, spywarre, content filtering, etc  all for NOTHING.

O don't get me wrong guys I love this product and I am gonna continue to use it. I was just puzzled by how I was already up to 10 IP addresses. But now that I sit down and think about it I know why. I would be willing to pay for more IP's if Astaro would allow home users to do so.

Only one other question for you long term users here. On the licensing tab under active IP addresses it now says I have 11 active IP's in which I know I don't since there is only two machines on in the network. So my question is when does this active IP list update?

Each IP counted "lives" for 7 days after it's last detected, so "dead" IPs are removed after a week.

There used to be an option in v6.x that allowed you to zero (reset) the IP count from within the ASG but in v7.x that option has been removed.
If you want to zero the IP count to remove machine IP addresses that are no longer active in your network you can restart the ASG. I think this has the same effect. It removes the entries from the list, so I guess it does.

Inactive IPs get dropped from the count after 1 week.
