Hardware appliance only

Does it seem to anyone else that Astaro is moving towards supporting only it’s own hardware appliance market. 

I really can't asses if this is the case but:

For corporate users the appliances are from a price point and support point of view really an OK deal.
If you have to build your own 19" rack machine (and support it) with e.g. 8 network ports it will probably cost you more and also becomes a cable mess...
Futhermore the per user license model with a substantial user base will cost you lots of $$$.

So my guess is that most company's will go for an appliance anyway instead of a pure software package.

Using a desktop in case of emergency will always be a possibility: 
Load it up with vmware or another virtualization product and you're ready to go...

Furthermore as a corporate user I would rather have that Astaro put's its efforts in stabilizing and improving it's product than enabling the latest & greatest hardware...

As far I know you cannot run the appliance version on a non appliance hardware, that would include VM-Ware.

I appreciate the thought and I can see the appliance side of cost and support. The problem I have is that I already have quite a few installs that don’t expire until 2011 so I’m a bit nervous about where things are going. I haven’t seen any notice or pricing about switching from software to appliance and I already have $$$ invested.

If that is the Astaro focus I could be a bit screwed.

I don't think that Astaro will be dropping software only installs as an option...  yes, if you use bleeding-edge hardware, support can be a crap shoot... but bear in mind that they are sure to be testing for compatiblity with their hardware appliances first before they worry about the latest / greatest hardware.  That said, with hardware chipsets / processor lifecycles being what they are, they will from time to time have to upgrade their appliances to a different platform, as we have seen with the 220 and 425 appliances recently... so I really don't see much of a problem with just abiding by the HCL if you are going to run your own hardware.

In my experience, most hardware works as long as it is not bleeding-edge.
This is often the case in most linux distributions, not just ASL.

If you're thinking of buying something not on the HCL, you can post it here and see if anyone else is running it.

The pricing of the appliances is very attractive, but we need to minimize downtime, so currently, we are using HP hardware with a 4-hour Call To Repair contract, which means it will be fixed on-site within 4 hours of reported failure. Unfortunately, Astaro has nothing approaching that in terms of hardware repair or replacement.

I realize that Hardware Fail-over is another option, but it wasn't available when we got started with Astaro, nor were the appliances available then.

There's the rub really, I'm not using bleeding edge hardware but I'm also not using Dell and HP which is a big part of the HCL. I'm not having major problems "yet" but when I recently had to upgrade a V6 box to V7 I decided to grab a new Lenovo PC, nothing fancy just more CPU and 3GB RAM. What I found was the lack of SATA support that you read so much about here. What shocked me next was that I couldn't find another model that didn't have the SATA drives and from what I understand it's been that way for quite some time.

The seemingly large increase in resources needed for V7 means I can't just grab any old PC if the need arises and the fact that some new hardware doesn't work has almost given me vista-shock. I trust Astaro with a lot and I'm just wondering if I've gotten too comfortable with somehting that has just always worked and not kept an eye on the direction of the company.

By "bleeding-edge" I meant "new" (recently designed).

What I found was the lack of SATA support that you read so much about here.

There is some confusion here... Astaro supports MANY SATA controllers, but there are MANY MORE coming out every day which are not YET supported.

I'm not sure if you literally mean "old", but OLD, sitting around, hardware tends to work GREAT.

I'm using an old PIII at home (see my sig).
For home use, with all features, a 800MHz+ PIII with 1GB RAM should be more than sufficient.
You haven't said how many users you have, etc., so it's hard for us to know what you really need.

Also, if you have hardware that isn't working, boot up knoppix or some other CD-based distro, and run
lspci -v
and 
lspci -n

and post the results under the hardware/installation forum topic.

We sell custom systems in situations where budget or other concerns make an appliance a poor fit (but we do sell a lot of appliances too), and I have to say we haven't had much trouble selecting new, openly available hardware that works, by using the HCL (for chipsets that are supported, etc.).

Barry's point about Linux distros in general being more finicky about hardware is also quite valid; It can be difficult to get new devices to work on Linux, particularly with manufacturers (like Broadcom, Marvell, etc.) that don't really have much in the way of a Linux driver set... the open source community often comes up with a solution, but it takes time.  My new laptop, for instance, can't use the wireless interface that's built into it on OpenSUSE 10.3 ... and I've attempted pretty much every workaround out there for it... so I dual boot into Vista to use the wireless.  I'll have to wait (it's my fault for not checking to see what kind of wireless nic is built into it) until someone comes up with a solution.
