Migrate from IPCop?

Hi there

I'm a long time listener of Security Now and figured I'd see if Astaro was worth using to replace my IPCop box at home. My current set up is an old version of IPCop (1.2 I think) with 2 network cards and an Alcatel Speed Touch home ADSL modem. The red interface on IPCop (external card) is on the same subnet as the modem and uses PPTP to connect to the modem and authenticate with my ISP. Can I replicate this setup using Astaro?

    I used Smoothwall (from which IPCop was forked) for several years before changing to Astaro and I don't see any problems with what you are asking to do although did you really mean PPTP?

    I would warn you about two things when making the change:

    - Whereas IPCop and Smoothwall let pretty much anything out from the safe network by default Astaro doesn't let anything anywhere by default so you may find a bit of a learning curve there particularly if you have many applications that communicate using non-standard ports over the internet, e.g. World of Warcraft, Second Life, etc.

    - Also, unlike IPCop, there is a limitation for the free home licence on the number of machines that you can use on your home network. This is tied to 10 IP addresses. If you have more than a couple of machines I would recommend that you start with Astaro Version 6.x since there have been a number of people experiencing problems with Astaro over-counting on V. 7

    you also need a much beefier machine to run astaro.  You REALLY should upgrade to 1.4.16 since earlier versions do have some serious security exploits.
