Installing ASG on a 64 bits machine ?

Hi,

I plan to install Astaro Security Gateway on a AMD Athlon 64 X2 based machine.

Without 64 bits support, I cannont run the Folding at Home SMP client, which I planned to install on the gateway to use the spare CPU cycles.  Installing two 32 bits FAH clients is not an option for me.

Does ASG install 64 bits Linux OS on 64 bits capable hardware ?  I could run ASG in a 32 bits virtual machine over a 64 bits linux host, but I much prefer not doing so.

    Astaro is a 32 bit Linux based distribution for the 386,486 & 586 Intel binary instruction set. It will run on a 64 bit Athlon, using it as a 32 bit processor.

    I would look at putting this on a VMWare host...  Astaro has made life easy by creating both ESX and VWWare Server / Workstation images, available for download at http://download.astaro.com.  I have several deployments using ASL on a VMWare Server host, works fine.

    I planned to use ASG to secure two isolated local networks, wired and wireless.

    If I install Astaro in a VMWare guest hosted by a Linux 64 bits OS, am I right to think that I will need 4 NIC cards configured as the following ?

    - 1 NIC for the Linux host itself
    - 1 NIC for the ASG "WAN" port
    - 1 NIC for the ASG "Wired LAN" port
    - 1 NIC for the ASG "Wireless LAN" port

    I need network connectivity in the host for the Folding at Home client...

    3 nics total--one for the LAN side of the Astaro (I assume you'll have other workstations that will be accessing the internet via the Astaro than the LInux host itself), one for the WAN (internet) side, and one for your Wireless DMZ.  The Linux Host (which I'm assuming you are going to load the Folding @ Home client on) can communicate with the Astaro via a VMNET interface (NAT or HOST Only) ... so just 3 NICs are necessary.

    Well, thank you for this precision !

    I never had to connect the host via the guest using VMNET interfaces to get network connectivity, so it was not in my plans...  To be honest, I never assigned physical interface to a guest machine before.

    I was looking for a PCI-e card for the host, as my PCI slots will all be used by the network cards...

    I'll keep you up to date if I have any problem with this setup.

    Of course, I plan to connect my wired machines to the LAN side of ASG.

    You can get away with even less network cards, if the cards you do have support VLANs and the switch(es) you use support VLANs.
