V7 on an ASG220 imo not enough resources

Hi there,

i used my asl at home with v7 now for testing and learn to understand the new version etc. In business not implement v7 yet.
At home i used an Dell-Server with 2,3GHz and 1GB of RAM. The resources shown in the dashboard always used 50-60% of RAM. So i think it is not good to upgrade a ASG220 to v7, because it have only 512MB-RAM.
I ask my distributor for buy a new RAM-Modul for my ASG, but it is not possible or planed from Astaro.

At home i used only one DSL-Line, RAS, http and smtp proxy (other options sometimes for testing). On Business the asl/asg must handl:
2 DSL-Lines
3 VPN-Tunnel (Net-to-Net)
2-3 RAS
most of the proxies (with all features)
and emailencryption ist planed

Anybody experience with the RAM/CPU-Usage, what is realy needed for ASGv7?

I've a 220 as well. I think that performance will come down to how many users/concurrent connections the 220 will have to handle at a time. If possible, try to cut down the RAM on your home ASL to more closely emulate a 220 (take out half the RAM and and see what happens).

A 220 is non-upgradeable. The system board in these is limited (by the Intel Chipset used, I believe) to 512MB. However, I have noted marked improvements in V7's abilities to run w/ 512MB on my test system as the up2dates have come out.. I expect that they'll eventually get everything tuned perfect... 7.004 is a lot better...

Yes, V7 with only 512MB does still result in occasional stoppages (swap, no doubt)... it has gotten better, but certainly not working as well as V6 does, not just yet.

We have been running v.7 on our ASG220 since its release, in production with 38 users and have seen adaquate performance for our our usage. Yes the memory usage runs high (approx 70% average), but it rarely spikes either. If performance is your main concern then I would recommend purchasing the software and run it on your own hardware. The issue there becomes the licensing for how many devices your have. But its a trade off.

We are more than happy with the performance of V7 on our ASG220
licensed for Web only (no email security or encryption).

I will be rolling out the SSL vpn to 15 users next month, we will see what it does to performance.

we are aware of that and working on an optimized memory usage which will be part of the 7.005 up2date. Please stay tuned, i am looking forward to your feedback.
We have issued a beta up2date of 7.005 yesterday, therefore everybody who has access to http://insider.astaro.com can download and test it.

What's the password for insider Gert?

I've not tried 7.004 on my ASG220 ... I gave up with it on 7.002 when performance was dire and reverted to v6. 7.003 did fix the massive memory bloat in WebAdmin. Given how cheap RAM is surely doubling the RAM across the entire ASG range (or making it an upgrade option) would not be that hard? Why not overspec your entire hardware range to facilitate upgrades rather than build a release which kneecaps the performance of the lower end appliances??

I can confirm using 7.005 beta that system is using a lot less RAM.

Seems stable so far (on own hardware).

I've posted some tips to help reduce memory utilization and find memory hogs.

We have "helped" our ASG a bit by replacing the HARD Disk ..

Disk is quicker so stuff doesn't back up as much ! (Not an Official upgrade of course)
