High CPU Forcing a Reboot

Hello.  I am still very new to this firewall.  It seems to be using too much CPU in the middle of the day around 1:30 to 3:00 PM.  I notice the Internet come to a crashing halt and I am forced to reboot the Firewall.

I upgraded from 7.003 to 7.004 in hopes that would fix it but it still continues.  How do I diagnose and resolve this?  I have attached a weeks Hardware Report that shows a spike the same time each day.

    How much RAM is installed in your firewall?
    It appears that you are using a significant portion of the swap partition.
    That tells me that you need considerably more RAM in the machine.

    the realistic minimum ram for Astaro is 1 gigabyte.

    This might be some sort of log compression function, that would normally run at night.

    Make sure your clock/date and timezone settings are right.

    It shouldn't slow down your connection though.

    I checked the time and it is all right.  

    Again today it hit at 1:30 PM.  And yes it drops the connection to a crawl. It is noticeable on all Internet browsing.

    Memory utilization doesn't appear to be an issue while that is running looking at the memory and swap utilization.

    Can you log in via console and run top while the connection is slow? Can you perform any ping/traceroute tests while the connection slow and compare to when the connection is fast?

    Does this happened also in the weekend when nobody is in the office? If so then it's a cron job doing what ever...

    Or are you running a backup job or something like to or from the Internet at that time?

    Or what NIC's are you using?

    I think I have found the issue.  I had installed a new server on my network for a client.  It is an SBS2002R2 server and I had put WSUS v3.0 on it.  It had picked 1:30PM to do a Update sync.  For some reason it spiked the CPU of the firewall.  I changed the time to 4AM and the CPU has not spiked like that since.  Strange that changing the time did not cause the same type of spike.

    I am using the Astaro at home and have the same issue. Every few hours the astaro hangs and a cannot do anything through it, not even a ping to the internet. All I can do is a hard shutdown and a reboot. This is making me crazy since I do not have any servers running at home. 

    A few minutes ago a restarted the box and 5 minutes after that I had to do it again. It runs on brand new Asus Pundit Hardware with the specs a have in my signature. Now I have completely disabled the IPS engine. Let's see what's happening...

    Do you have any client machines set to update antivirus or (egad) automatic Windows Update? As mentioned previously, these can be truly problematic (and this applies to workstations as well as servers).

    I run a number of these boxes on Compaq Proliant DL360 dual Pentium III/800 CPUs w/2GB RAM and mirrored 18.2GB drives. I see no spiking like this even on networks with 50 or so workstations and several servers, running multiple IPSec VPN tunnels all the while, along with SMTP proxy, IPS, and email & web content filtering.

    I did a new v7 installation a week or so ago, on an HP Proliant DL360 G4 with dual 3.4GHz Xeons, 2GB RAM, and mirrored 36.4GB drives. It runs approximately a dozen stations in the office, two NetWare servers, a Linux server, a W2K3 server, SMTP proxy, IPS, web & email filtering, and twenty or so IPSec VPNs. So far, its resources are barely tapped.

    I'm not crazy about the choice of IDE over SCSI in your setup, however, but I can't place blame on that for a condition such as you report. How did you test the hardware before putting it into production? I've never had particularly good luck with ASUS boards (and stay away from them, as a rule), though I know others who swear by them.

    Thanks for your reply! No I have no servers at all, because this Astaro works in a home environment with two Macs [;)]

    The internal HDD is a SATA Drive. Today it happened again. I went to bed at around 2.30AM and when I woke up at 10AM I could not connect to the internet and not to the Astaro itself. I had to do a hard reset again, and after this I could see in the logs that the cpu usage went up at around 6PM but I do not know why. IPS is not enabled at the moment...

    I didn't ask if you had any servers... [;)]

    I still think the SATA vs SCSI debate remains unresolved. For server devices, I just find SCSI to be a more reliable choice.

    No, I do not have any Windows Clients in my network. Only two Macintosh Computers and for these two my SATA drive for my astarto should suffice [;)]
