What's with Astaro 7?

I've been using ASL since version .. oh, whatever, way back in years. However, I haven't spent much time with it for a couple of years - yes, my old servers still work, even without up2date.

Yesterday, I started installing 7.002.. and just about nothing works. WebAdmin is slow, and needs to be closed from time to time (the ajax script seems to stop working when it feels like it). If you try to add hosts when the server isn't *just* waking from restart, it hangs. If you add a VPN tunnel to the office through PSK and public IP, it hangs after about 2 hours. All of these things start working again if you reset the FW machine.

I've never had these problems before. Is there something special with 7.002 and VIA motherboards that I'm not aware of? I use latest MS browser with up to date patches - I haven't tried firefox yet but come on, there are limits .. [;)] Client computer is a vanilla XP sp2 3GHz vintage, not VIA. The FQ computer is a brand new VIA, C7 proc with 512MB ram, SATA disk, built-in ethernet ports.

Anyone else seeing this?

    hi,

    i've the same issues with v7 and webadmin. extremely slow even if ram is 50% and cpu below 10%. pages are not completely loaded, often i have to completely reload the page and log in again to get it to respond again.

    i've also a lot of trouble with site-to-site vpns. after a dsl reconnect it seems that the ipsec process is started before the firewall gets an ip address via pppoe and then the ipsec daemon will fail to listen on the outside interface.
    if vpn is working it works for hours and then fails even the vpn status is all up. astaro confirmed a bug with ipsec connection tracking on that one.

    i have all this on astaro asg appliances, so these things are not related to incompatible hardware.

    i can't recommend v7 for production use at all at the moment. hope there will be a huge up2date package very soon...

    I can answer some of your questions about the webadmin. Webadmin is very reliant on the webbrowser and is host cpu intensive. Webadmin performance has very little to do with the cpu of memory on the ASG, but alot to do with your PC/workstation.

    Preferred webbrowsers
    1/. Firefox 1.5.x or 2.x
    2/. IE 7
    3/. IE 6

    I prefer to use firefox, less problems with webadmin.

    I don't use VPNs yet, that will happen in the next month or so to access the work network.

    I've heared the argument about local PC performance regarding WebAdmin performance from Astaro as well.

    I second that Firefox is working better than IE, however both have issues and for me it's a must for a business-grade product to fully support IE.
    Also my typical WebAdmin client PCs are all normal office hardware with 2 or 3Ghz CPUs, 1 GB RAM and loading everything else without issues. I've never tried what happens when I close all other applications, only use Firefox and don't click to fast on WebAdmin buttons. Even if that would improve stability of the admin interface it's nothing I would accept from a professional product.
    So I'm still more waiting for a good up2date package rather than for another gig of RAM in my notebook [:)]

    Hi Tim,
    I am a newb using ASG for the 1st time, but I have been having the same problem with 7.002.  I have plenty of RAM (725 MB, with plenty free) everywhere and that doesn't seem to help.  The brutally slow interface makes it nearly impossible to use and learn on.  There must be a reason for this lag.  

    Rather than waste anymore time, I believe I will try to install the latest version 6 since this seems to be only a version 7, judging problem from the forums.

    My httpd has also been crashing and won't run again until reboot, and giving a cryptic write error in the logs (/var/log/httpd.log) saying there is not enough room on the device, although df -h shows only 12% max used on any partition.  

    Hopefully I'll have better luck w/ v6.

    You will have better luck with 6.x until Astaro fixes some of the issues in 7.x. I have tried 7.002 and it is has a lot of potential but unfortunately there are still some  bugs that will have be worked out. 

    I’m hoping with the next update that Astaro will fix some of the VPN problems. Currently I use L2TP over IPSEC for Road warriors with version 6.304. The connections are rock solid and I had no problem getting them to work once configured The problem with version 7.002 is that it 7.002 takes a couple of tries to connect or once connected, the VPN connections may drop out. There was a previous post mentioning that Astaro has identified issues with the VPN but I can not confirm that.

    I would use the SSL VPN but I do not want to assign admin rights to my Road Warriors. Users have a tendency of picking up additional baggage that I do not need on my network.

    Yeah, stick with 6.304 for now.  I had similar experiences with 7.002, even with ASG running on different machines and accessing WebAdmin from a machine with Firefox 2.xx and 2GB of ram.  
    These problems have nothing to do with the machine you're accessing WebAdmin from.

    I think a lot of the 7.002 stability problems will be corrected in v7.003 since Astaro has taken more time preparing the next update.  

    It's been almost 7 weeks since 7.002 was released.  I remember when v6.0 came out, there were updates at least on a weekly basis for the first couple of months.  

    So, I'm assuming they're making some major changes which should really bring performance and stability up closer to the production environment level.  [H]

    I hope so, Astaro has been very quiet on the forums the past couple months.

    as the support told me 2 days ago, 7.003 should come this week!?!

    and the dhcp-on-vlan-bug will not be corrected in this version - this will be in 7.004. but no one knows, when this will be released.

    We just did the upgrade from 6 to 7 and what a nightmare!!!!! Of course it was all our fault not the fact that I can never get a reply back from support. Well, now for two days I haven't been able to get into WebAdmin at all. Called yesterday hopefully will hear today. Do you have any ideas what could have caused this?? I was working in it and it froze. Restarted the box and the filtering is on but I still am unable to get to Webadmin. I have had this product for almost a year now and almost wish I would have looked a little harder for options.

    Are you running the latest v7.003?

    It seems that most people are staying with v6 for now which is rock solid for nearly everyone.

    Just today upgraded with support. They finally got my webadmin back by having me hook up directly to the box and we did a restore from Saturday. I started entering my black list url's and it locked up again. this time I only had to restart the box and I could get back in. I wish I would have know before I started I couldn't import my 6 backup into 7.

    kbaeten, you should have read the documentation, the fact that you can't restore a backup from v6 to v7 yet is well known.

    I'd suggest putting 6.304 back on your machine.  There seem to be some major teething problems with ASG v7.  

    Hopefully these will be resolved soon as this type of software should not be having stability problems.  
    (IMHO the v7 release should have been postponed a few more months, or however long it takes)

    It was recommended from the vendor we bought the hardware from. Who also set it up for us. Big mistake I know I should have read into it but their information said the end of April and I was just hoping that it was set. I called and asked and they told me at that point it was pushed out until the beginning of May now. It just was a project that should have taken 2 hours that last two days because we had to wait for a whole new box.

    I wouldn't say it was a mistake.  I think ASG is by far the best firewall product on the market right now.  

    However, v7 is not currently up to par for most types of installations.  

    Check with your vendor and see if they can load v6 on your appliance until v7 becomes more mature.  

    That's my recommendation.  I personally will be staying with v6.304 or any newer releases of the 6.3xx as it's been rock solid for me.  
    I might upgrade to v7 when it gets to v7.1 or 7.2, but not until then; it's just too unreliable in my experience.
