WebAdmin Slow

Hi, I am an ASG home user with v 7.002.  It is installed on a 1.4G Athlon w/ 725M ram.  

I am having trouble using the WebAdmin interface.  It seems to be terribly slow.  I have tried accessing it through Firefox under Linux, FF & IE7 under Win XP, and FF & IE6 under Win2k.

It also seems to crash sometimes and the only way I can fix it is to reboot the ASG server.  I am a fairly experienced linux user so I have been logging in as root and attempting to restart the httpd service or reboot by issuing the reboot command when things seem to be going totally haywire.  

The reason I reboot is the httpd (WebAdmin) server crashes and I can't restart it.  I do a "# tail /var/log/httpd" and I get a cryptic write error saying no room is left on the device.  I do a # df -h and see I have plenty of room (max 12% used on any partition).  

The speed of this panel is really annoying. It is obviously doing a bunch of stuff and using a bunch of J-script.  I often have a 30 sec to 2 minute delay between clicks and updates on the screen, with the occasional crash of WebAdmin.  

I am a new ASG user and if this Control Panel is always like this please tell me another way I can configure this stuff or if there is a setting I can change to fix this.

Although probably irrelevant, My architecture is:

(DSL modem 192.168.0.1 eth) ---- (eth0 at 192.168.0.2 / ASG / eth1 at 192.168.1.1) ---- (switch)----(My PC at 192.168.1.12)

eth0 on ASG is setup with the default gateway at 192.168.0.1
There are no other PC's but mine on the LAN yet.

    I think BarryG means more ram in your ASG. Under v7.*** at least 512 is required for performance with any of the proxies enabled.

    Webadmin performance is affected by the host memory and cpu performance, not so much by the ASG configuration. Most processing is offload to the users PC/workstation.

    I agree with both people here above. First I used 768 MB of RAM but upgraded to 1256 MB of RAM. It improves a lot in the over all performance of ASG V7.x! One of the main reasons of improvement is that if there's more RAM, linux loads more services into the RAM so it can be accessed faster. So, how more RAM, how faster your system reacts.

    My ASG PC has 725M of RAM.  I am sorry I should have been more clear.  My laptop I view the stuff with has 1G, although I know that doesn't really matter.

    What kind of NICs are you using?

    Run top on the console and see if something is hogging the CPU.

    do you use realtek nic's? if so change them since they are very cpu intensive. try some intel's.

    can it be a problem of the athlon proccesor? is astaro more in tune for intel? just guessing here.

    about the memory... if 725mb of ram isn't enough then sorry but then astaro belongs in the skip... it's only a firewall / proxy box with a web interface by the end of the day!

    RAM is likely not the answer here... the write error you speak of is rather wierd... is it possibly you have a hard drive going bad? Try reinstalling with a new / known good hard drive.  Also, update to Version 7.004.
