newbie ?'s bout the s/ware

It'd be easier to answer your questions if you framed them with some sort of idea about what you're trying to do. Asking if the software replaces the router will get you the answer "It depends" - upong what you're trying to do. 
With regards to VMWare, or the regular software - it's the same stuff. There are quick start guides available, which is where you need to start. 
You don't start by logging into the server. You start by logging into a web console pointed at the server, set your passwords, and configure from there.

I just wanted to give the software a try.  I probably want to use it for the same reason you want to use it.    I am  frustrated that I find no implementation summary documentation.  I mean, to put it plainly, maybe someone can help me by showing me where the documentation is that would answer my questions, or answer them on the board.  Surely I am not the only one wondering how to use this software?

I have a wireless network.  Can I use this software on it or not?

As the previous poster advised, you have been too generic.
 
Pointers to manuals, have a look at www.astaro.com and search there or alternatively download the copy from within the ASG software.
 
Wireless networks, depends on what you mean.
 
If you mean will the ASG software run a wireless card, the answer is no.
If you mean will it interface the internet and you have your wireless AP connected to the ASG the answer is yes.
Yes, it turns a dedicated PC into a firewall/router, depending on how you configure it.
 
Most of us home users (generalisation) only have to NICs, one for WAN and the other for local users.
A very simplistic approach
1/. setup your WAN interface (PPPoE/Cable etc)
2/. setup your internal interface
3/. create a packet filter rule that "allows" the "internal network" to use "any"  (protocol) to "any" (internet address)
4/. create a MASQ rule that alows the "internal network" to NAT to the "external interface".
A more detailed use of the ASG
5/. From there you can enable things like use the ISP supplied DNS
6/. Setup the NTP function so your PCs can get network time
7/. When you get braver you can enable DHCP on the internal interface
8/. then there is IDS, anti virus, http proxies, ftp proxies, pop3 proxies (give prefetch a misss for the moment), smtp proxies, protocol helpers.

Sounds like you are trying to login via console. The ASG is administrated using the WebAdmin, not the console. If you connect (using a browser) to the IP you can set during the installation (HTTPS, on port 4444) you will be asked to set an administrator password.

Thank you for the response, and thank you for not asking me to first define what a wireless network is.  

Yes, I followed the instructions exactly, but at the login screen, the one just before what I have to suppose would be the WebAdmin.  I simply do not make it to that point.

I get the address above the prompt to login, I type in whatever name I want, try to set a password, but login fails.  I type in admin and try to set a password, but login fails.

I got the five beeps and all, just can't get to the WebAmin screen.  Can't login to get to the WebAdmin screen.

Where RFCat_vk writes the software cannot run a wireless card, I don't know what running a wireless card means.  I don't know why supporting a wireless network would depend upon what I mean.  Do I really have to define what a wireless network is before asking if the software supports one makes sense?  Maybe you people are just so incredibly smart that these simple questions are difficult to make the long travail from those great heights, but could you maybe at least try?

I don't know why it so difficult to communicate about this software.

I am compelled to ask, can't anyone help me to know what network configurations are supported?  How can I possibly pass on any recommendation if people act like they don't know what I am talking about when I am plainly stating I am having problems, both with the login and with the documentation.  And now with the people here who are, if like most BB's, here to help?

If I am sounding upset, it is because I am.   I don't mind going through some learning curve, don't mind one bit, not a problem at all, but when people act like they don't know what a network is, or why I would want to use this software, well, my kindest words would be that that is ridiculous, and that is the frustration.

I am sorry, but your answer isn't making that much sense.
 
You asked about wireless in your original post and I answered that ASG software does not support wireless cards. That is not saying the ASG cannot support a wireless network, but you will need a seperate wireless access point (a different piece of hardware) which you connect to the ASG.
 
To put it very simply if the device has an ethernet (cable connection) interface you can plug it into the ASG. even better if it uses IP addressing.
 
I would suggest in your case trying to evaluate ASG via vmware is not the easiest thing to do. If you have an old PC, put a second NIC (LAN card) in it and install v7.*** on it. I expect you will find that method a lot easier.

so if I can't login, then my 'answer' does not make sense.   Whatever, I mean, isn't that MY position, that I can't make sense of this?  Maybe I'll try it when there is some real documentation, and when people know what connecting to a wireless network mean.

Not sure why you bothered even trying if you only allowed 1 day to test a product as complicated as the ASG firewall.
If you were a firewall and networking guru I would say fair enough.
 
Before you vanish off to look at other products do a search of the forums for all threads covering vmware, there have been some very helpful posts from very knowledgable vmware people.
 
As one of the other posters in this thread advised, you asked very generic questions for most of the issues, so how can you expect to get specific answers.

It STILL sounds like you are trying to login via console.

What you need to do, is connect the Internal NIC on the ASL box to a workstation on same IP subnet you created when you set up ASL during the install.

On the workstation, browse to the ASL webadmin page using a web browser.

ie: https://10.0.10.1:4444 (Or whatever IP you set during install)

You should then get a web page load, prompting you for password setup.

Forget about the ASL box itself after you hear the 5 beeps...  Pull its monitor and keyboard off [:)]
