v7 in Production environment?

Please explain why you feel v7 is not ready for prodution.  This will help Astaro understand what is still required to be fixed..

[v7.000] POP3 Proxy flakey - POP3 and HTTP proxies are both unstable.  Prefetch, mail notifications, authentication are just some of the problems.
7.001 Argh! - the sort of issue which pushes non-technical users away to more "commercial" products.
Update from beta to final release? - a GA that can't be upgraded to seemlessly is not a GA, it's still a Beta test.  Commercial users expect the ability to upgrade without rebuilds.
6.933 Issues list - DNS issues raised here still exist.
This Bug never got fixed!!! - but I think it was raised back at v6.913, or earlier?
6.993 Issues - the last beta release was less stable than the one before, but the GA came out very soon after without many of the issues resolved.
Is v7 Ready for Go? - some good issues raised here, as summaries to other threads.  Very few (if any?) got fixed for the GA.
Hardware, Installation, Up2Date - heaps of posts regarding hardware support, install issues etc.  Looks like a lot of systems that ran v6.3 fine will not be able to run v7, but not from a spec point-of-view, but rather just lacking basic support for the hardware?

I'm the only distributor in NZ (that I know of) and I push hard against people resisting a "less commercially acceptable" brand of firewall.  I stand behind this product 100% but to release a GA in this state doesn't help!  Especially when the user community has been very clear about the issues, has raised them very quickly and, from what I see on these forums, have been 200% willing to invest in test platforms, time, and effort to assist in testing and providing technical feedback, log extracts, access to systems so that issues can be tracked down.

Sorry to be negative, I support this product and want to get it right.  However, I stand by my concern that v7 is not ready for Joe-Average public to purchase and install, and as such is not ready for "GA".

Am I wrong?

Think the Beta was more stable then the final, at least here in the lab.

Who the hell knows if it's ready until you get it out there? 

Has the ISO for appliance upgrade been released? If it has, I'll be putting a couple into production. Like I said, you don't know until you go.

Agree 100%... v7 was rushed out way too fast.

I am also extraordinarily peeved that I will have to spend around $4000US+ to upgrade all our licenses to have Web Security.  None of our licenses had "surf protection" and now the HTTP proxy is no longer included free of charge.

So paying maintenance <> Free upgrades.

The v7.001 Argh thread... I may not be a Linux guru but I can navigate around a Linux system OK and do basic maint.

An automatic update should not be causing the system to basically crash n send bulk spurious warnings.

I have also had the system become unresponsive on numerous times editting interface settings. (Changing default gateway from one NIC to another).

The new webmin, although cute, and I like the way you can drag hosts/services around with the mouse.  Initially this blew me away.
After using it for a while I think I prefer the v6 interface however.  The v7 one is cramped, takes time to redraw/refresh and half the time text is cutoff descriptions because they don't fit in the windows.
More of a niggle than anything, but when spending a lot of time in the interface sometimes I wish for the v6 interface.

When doing configuration changes the ASG stops for all users of the proxies.

I have a time managed son (Packet filter and HTTP profiles) and when I change the time settings all users of the HTTP proxy complain the network is down.

If I was doing this on a PIII I would say okay, but not on my ASG. This happened during beta testing and I thought it was because the system wasn't tuned.

THere is not yet a version of V7 that will restore V6 backup files, or do in-place upgrades.  If you're interested, your reseller should have access to the V7 Appliance ISO, if you don't mind creating a fresh configuration (I'm a reseller, and they sent me links to go download it the other day).  I, however, will not be doing much with V7 until the end of March, which is when Astaro says it should have a version that can import V6 config files.  My customers have very complex configurations, plus we are finding plenty of bugs and issues that need to be resolved before we use it anyway (not a bash on Astaro; It seems there's always bugs in any .0 release any software vendor puts out there).

That's what Beta testing is for, and the Beta testing showed it wasn't ready.  To my mind, it's still in Beta.

I'll bet that it was a marketing decision to push ahead with the release.  Maybe they have hired someone from MS [8-)]

You are completely right. The v4 to v5 transition went much smoother than this one as did the v5 to v6 transition. Not to mention there still isn't a v6 to v7 migration path available. IMO, v7 should never have been released without a straight forward migration path!

I don't dare install v7 on any production systems, there are just too many unknowns and too many scary trouble reports. Besides, v6 is running quite well right now!

Thats normal with all new products, we too won't migrate our customers until late summer this year. Just wait, till all the small but annoying bugs are found and fixed.

I also don't see moving any production firewalls to v7 for at least a couple months (we have 6 in production right now and planning more).
