Home User Licencing Debate

This debate thread caught my eye because I checked in today to see if there was any recent change to the ‘home user’ license.  This is something I’ve been keeping my eye on.  I really think Astaro is a great product and superior firewall and I’d love to use it again.  

Here’s my story:

I run an IT department for a small video game company.  I found and recommended that we purchase the Astaro license, which we did a couple years ago (the first payment a couple thousand $s and then an update or so the next year for less money, but still significant $).  So you could say I threw quite a bit of business Astaro’s way.  We had only 1 tech-support question at setup and from that point didn’t bother them at all.

However, because my time is limited, I wanted to run and become expert in only one firewall.  This included work and home.  So I ran Astaro at home for a while.  My family has 3 desktops (mine/hers/kids), 1 laptop, 2 servers (file server and music server), a squeezebox music player, a Crestron Home Automation system (with an Ethernet card), 3 IP cameras, a WAP (our guests can either use the wireless or plug-in in any room), an Okidata IP printer and 4 VOIP phones.  I haven’t gotten around to hooking up a video server yet (but MythTV or Freevo look great), but I know I will.  In the future I’m sure even more IP devices will be added.  Either more music players, phones, or specialized media devices with Ethernet ports (like cable boxes or tvs).

This example is not extreme at all.  Geeky, yes.  Extreme, no.

Now the printer doesn’t need outside access.  But the other devices do and I’m over the 10 user limit. 

The result of this is that when I got annoyed, I didn’t renew our Astaro license at work so I now run a firewall with a more reasonable license at home and work.  I think Astaro is the superior product so I’m not happy about it, and that’s why I check this forum from time-to-time.  For what it’s worth, maybe the Astaro people will read this story and realize they could get more business by being friendly to the sys admins.  How about 25 or 30 IPs?  This is 2007, not 1997, there are IP devices everywhere.

Also, I realize it’s FREE for home use, and they don’t even have to do that.  I’m just giving my rationale.  I don’t want to use and learn 2 different products for work and home.  Astaro is a deep and wonderful product that takes time to master.

Surely I can’t be the only person here with over 10 IP devices at home?  Am I really the worst one here?  Geesh.

I've actually got more but was listing the devices I use commonly.  I actually had 3 more cable boxes that needed IPs until last week when I got rid of them since my in-laws moved out. I also have several PCs that are on every now and then plus a few more laptops.  My Wii takes an IP also.

I've got an ever changing assortment of yakety IP devices too.  But never had a problem with a 10 IP limit.  Lots of my random toys don't need internet access.  That's what an intranet is for and why I have lots of devices.  Devices can talk to my local server(s) or I can talk to the devices.  In fact I *don't* want most of the devices to get to the net.  If a temporary pc comes over it will go behind an internal router and I'll decide if it needs access to the intranet or the internet.

pservers, cameras, fridges, APs, yada yada.  They are for the local net and rairly/never need global access.  If you have that many devices then run a local server with DNS, SMTP, HTTP, NTP, and anything else the toys might need.  Much faster and certainly more secure that way.

I didn't get the feeling this was an angry debate.  It looks to me like some people have a problem and they are discussing their experiences with other users.  Just my take on it...

This debate on IP counts for home use leads to some serious questions on how good are the SOHO switches sold by the likes of Netgear, Linksys, D-Link etc.[;)]
If they were doing their job correctly most IP addresses that don't use the firewall would not be switched out the ASG port and therefore never seen by the ASG. [[:)]]The exception being at powerup or the initial connection of a device to the network.
Or do I need to go and buy a more expensive managed etherswitch?[:S]

I've run into the same problem at home, as I use VoIP phones, and have 3 computers networked, as well as an xbox or two, and went above the rather small 10 user limit, which you can't blacklist devices from. Caused me to swap what firewall i'd vote for in the office as well, which was the central VLAN firewall for our datacenter (work for an ISP).

I don't blame them for limiting the Home license to 10 IP addresses... we all know someone (I know a lot of "someones") who would cheat, and use a license that allowed more IPs for business use.. I'd bet there are some that already are, even with the 10 IP limit (small offices) in force... I can't blame them for making sure they are making money, and not just giving away the farm.  Perhaps a nice middle ground would be for them to offer a home license with more IPs for a fee...

Why can't Astaro just phone home, so that the real paying customers can get a nice home use version with > 10 IPs?  This would completely solve the problem of people 'cheating' and reward the users who support Astaro.  Seems like a perfect solution.

Offering a home version for a small fee is another good alternative like you mention, but this problem is definitely only going to get bigger as more and more IP devices make their way to market.

I love this product.  Even more since I started using 6.9x betas.  Haven't gone to 7.0 yet since I have to pull the box to put in a disk drive to run the image on   (it runs in a teeny little box, no room for cdrom)... BTW, sure would be nice to let beta folks do an up2date to the full version... really nice.

Anyhoo.  Gert.  My man.  Lots of us here have been using Astaro for home use for years ... For me since 2.0 I think.  I don't run a server farm or anything, but I do have an xbox, a PVR, two laptops, a server, an NAS, an airport express, a printer, a Roku Soundbridge, and my TV remote all use ips and get counted in the list.

I think I've graduated from being a free software kind of guy.  This is a great product.  Let me pay for it.  I'll pay $100US to keep my network safe at home, just let me have a little room for the trinkets, okay?

P.S.  I don't need any support with that $100 license ... this forum is more than enough support for me.

I agree, 10 is way low. My switch has an ip for crying out loud. 2 ip phones, 3 guys computers and laptops (6), 4TB file server, wap, media server on hdtv, color laser printer and more. This is just for my home. All 3 of us are IT professionals. We sometimes bring parents,friends computers home to fix for free since we have super high speed internet for patches and drivers and such. so we could have anywhere between 16-30 computers at any one time. For us thats nothing. I also run a lan party for the community for free, fnff.net, and what if we need to game in our home? thats like 100 more computers. Never making money, this isnt a business, its for fun and for the good of our community. I guess at home I will have to stick with my home built linux firewall with tranparent proxy. Same thing just doesnt have the name astaro in it. no limits and its free. But I do use astaro at work. but the bosses paid for that [:)]

Me is not amused as well.... I was very happy when Astaro asked for new features and even happier when I found out that some of the features I voted for have been built in the new releasee.

I am useing Astaro for quite a while, beginning with Astaro 5 and just began testing for upgrade when I had to find out that they changed their license model - which I cannot use due to running out of IP-Adresses.

I wonder why they (Astaro) now offer a full featured home license for free when most of the home users which need a firewall like Astaro cannot use that license model. 

I'm currently running Astaro 6.303 and I payed for the security features like anti-spam, content filter and so on. I would still be willed to pay a fee for these features as I really require them - I have 2 children which need internet access for school and we don't have the time watch over their shoulders when the are online.

If Astaro would offer another / additional license, let's say 25 IP's for home user, I'd be ready to pay the new license. If they'd go back to the old license model, I'd pay for the security. However it's a weak solution to say: "now, we offer the home license for free at all, however, there are just 10 IP's accepted". Have they ever thought about who might use their systems?

Anyone with a litte LAN/WAN could use with ease an firewalled HW-Router, which uses less power, makes less noise and is somewhat cheaper - or he would install something like Norton or McAfee Internet Security or ZoneAlarm - never ever an Astaro, CheckPoint or Eagle Raptor and so on. Why do they kick their beta testers in the ass and say "good bye?"

My license for Astaro runs till end of the year - enough to have a look on some other solutions which might then be much more interesting as they did with the old license model.

What was the feature-set of the old Home-User license? 
How many IP's did it include?

I have another question about the home version. Lets say I have a webserver on the inside. when someone views the site, does it count as one connection? or does it count as many connections as they move about the site?

I have two IP-Printers, 4 Desktops for the childs, my spouse and me, a laptop from company and run for evaluation some VMware-Systems which I cannot hide (nat) for some reasons...

Assuming you are NOT using your IP printers outside the firewall you still only have 7 devices, plus your VMware-systems.  That should squeeze under the 10 IP limit of version 7.  

Part of the problem with the 10 user license as it is.. you can't tell if its a small business or a home user.  Thus the dilema of free vs. making money.

If I understand it correctly, incoming traffic to a web server is counted under the 1,000 concurrent connections portion of the licensing.  You should be fine unless you are running a huge website.

Unless of course you decide to host a bittorrent with tons of software people want for free instead of paying.  That would put you over the limit quickly.

I heard from Support that they plan to have a V7 up2date out by late March.
