Note you say IP professionals...  That's starting to get beyond home use...  Anyhow.  I think 10 is fair.  But unsure about the whole license thing changing to IP's terminating at the firewall rather than through...

Agreed on the IP count.

The 10 IP's should be reserved for devices passing traffic through the firewall, the term for these IP's I believe is "Protected IP's"

For example, the Sonicwall TZ170 device with a 10 user limit allows you to create an exception list of devices/users to exclude from the total device count.

My current home setup includes:
Two IP camera's
One server
One streaming media device
One desktop
One Laptop
One wireless access point
One managed Layer2 switch
One LAN connected printer

Total of 9 IP devices, All of which require an IP address (out of ease of use, these use DHCP with static IP's), However only three devices require internet access (In the Sonwall scenario, I'm using 3/10 IP's, all other devices are on the exclusion list and are denied internet access).

If there was a way I could tag devices and exclude them from the "protected IP's list" and have them not count towards the 10 IP limit would be nice.

Yes, my new DLP 62" toshiba television has an RJ45 and requires an IP address in order to connect it to a network of video files.  I wouldnt mind paying like $50 to have a 100 node home license for personal use... how about something like that?

Hey guys.... they are giving it away for FREE for HOME USE. Sure I am a professional but at home there is a desktop pc, a laptop and 2 IP-devices.

That's HOME USE. Running a whole citrix farm at home is "nerd-stuff" and so they want you to pay. The smallest ASG is not that expensive so get it or leave it.

Also they have made several "extras" available for free, too.

What are you doing on your home network that requires more than 1,000 connections?

In my half-dozen production Astaro installs, the only ones that go over 1,000 connections are the ones hosting busy websites or have over 50 clients.

Same here. Our 50 user office network and our DMZ net with web servers generate a total of 400 to 800 connections through the ASG.

Even with P2P (using it right now), 74 IPs in use and a couple light web servers behind the firewall my connection count normally stays below 1000.

The IP limit I can see being an issue for some people (I normally have 5 IPs active at home but if a couple friends come over with laptops I would quickly get close to the limit). I do think it would be nice for Astaro to sell upgrades to the home license, I could see them selling a decent number of them. But they are probably worried about people taking those license and using them for commercial purposes. Perhaps if they sold the home upgrades without official support it might work.

Since this thread is called Debate, I'm gonna debate a little.

I have been and am using a home license at home.  I am a techno nerd of sorts and have way over 10 IP nodes on my network.  At last count, about 30.  I suppose if I were using the astaro DHCP for all of them, I might have some of these issues with IP addresses since they would all get default gateways, but they could be eliminated with packet filter rules.  Since I use static IPs, I simply do not give a gateway to any device that does not need access to the Internet.  The ASG only counts IPs that route through the ASG.  If you need more than 10 IPs routed through the ASG then you need more than the free home license.

Now as far as the concurrent connections.  In addition to my home license, I have paid license that I run on my public servers.  It has a connection limit of 2000 but has never logged that limit.  I do not know exactly how the connections are counted or limited but this has been sufficient for this ASG that hosts multiple web servers, email servers, ftp servers, dns servers, etc.  I suspect that the 1000 limit on home use is a method to limit your ability to put your entire office behind a simple NAT router and use the ASG features for a purpose not intended.

Summary:
I'm personally having difficulty understanding how we can be complaining about the limits on a free product.  There certainly are other free products out there but you would be hard pressed to find one that has all the capabilities and installation ease and professional support.  Support is not available directly from a home license but the home user does benefit from the support us paid users get.  As a side note the connection limit may be low for some home applications but that's what you get for free.

I'd like to add a bit to this debate.  I am a tech guy, but at home try to have as few devices as possible.  My computers are two laptops and I have a NAS and IP printer (thats 4 IPs) however I also have 4 FiOS cable boxes which require IPs.  So now I'm at 8, and no one can debate whether a cable box is a consumer/home device.  The problem comes when I have guests or I use my laptop's wired connection temporarily.  These are counted also and boots the IP count over the limit.  Sometimes I VPN in which adds more.

The 10 limit IP count would be OK if the gateway would clear the IP list every few minutes or simply knock off the oldest seen IP instead of blocking requests for new IPs.  I would be willing to pay ~$50 for a "HOME" license that supports 20 users.

In any case since HOME devices (cable boxes, TVs, AppleTV, networked audio players) are becoming mainstream 10 IPs is simply too few.  10 IPs with active connections (traffic in the last 5 minutes) may be OK, but something needs to be done.
