New home user licensing more limited on V7..

And still no power users license... its been a good last 4 years, but now I must bow out...

Well, I read the release notes, and it looks like 10 user/10 ip addresses, with 1000 concurrent connections... however, it looks like they can shut down connections when it goes above %110 of usage on the 1000 user license now, and I am wondering if this will also happen with the 10 user license....

"Home-Use Licenses 
We will continue offering a Home-Use package. The new V7 package will be free of charge and will now include the base license, all subscriptions and Astaro Up2Date. But it will be limited to 10 IPs/10 Users, and 1000 concurrent connections.  
Note: Astaro will provide no support to home users and they need to agree to participate in Astaro’s Threat Research Network."

Within ASG software the limits for maximum IPs / users are now enforced in the following 
way: 
• The administrator will get an email notification if the IP limit is reached. 
• At that time new IPs / users will still be accepted up to a maximum of 110% 
of the licensed number of IPs (grace limit) 
• If the grace limit is reached no more IPs / users will be accepted

    I just noticed, that Astaros User(IP) counting dont work as described in that nice PDF.
    My customer habe a local Lan with ~500 IP Devices 
    Last time i install an additional ASG110 as BackupDoor.
    After checking LicenseCount i noticed that ASG also count broadcast(or other ip-spam) as User Licence.

    FWIW I received the invitation to take part in the 7.100 Beta but because I was  miffed about the lack of response on this thread I didn't take up the offer but I did reply to Gert Hansen and had a bit of a whinge. To my surprise and delight (I really am too used to form responses) Gert replied and acknowledged the problem; even admitting that he has more than 10 IP devices at home.

    As he explained it; the problem is that because of the licensing that they have to pay for they actually lose money on the home licenses. Now 10 IPs is enough for some small businesses to get away with using the free home license so the (legitimate) concern is that a (free or cheap) enhanced home user license would be more widely abused and actually hit Astaro quite hard.

    So I suppose the solution is for some genius to come up with a a simple, effective way of remotely distinguishing between true home users and small businesses ripping off the company. Tricky!

    Version 1 is the same as the current one.
    Version 2 removes features that cost Astaro money (I suspect anti-virus, spam detection patterns, web fitering, etc) but adds more IPs and connections.

    Astaro can continue to offer upgrades for users who are active on the forums.

    I like this approach!  I've never used any of those features as it is.  I have no need for them since I don't download suspicious files, I use web based e-mail, and don't have a need for web filtering.

    I'm not sure I agree with that.
    The printer, etc., never use the gateway, in fact the ONLY communcation they ever sent to or through the ASL box is the DHCP request.
    If I had no gateway setup in the ASL box DHCP server, I'm sure the printer, etc., still would have been counted.




    For me, it's easier to give the printer, etc., a static DHCP lease in ASL than it is to try to setup a static IP on the printer, etc.
    Also, it makes it MUCH easier to move the printer, etc. to a new network.
    e.g. I moved my streaming media client to a WiFi DMZ, without having to re-program it.

    excuse me... but we are talking about HOME users license here for home users. if this is already to much as a home user to give your printer an static ip number because you move it around all the time...

    And, I think, here is the problem. I use Astaro for precisely those features because I have young children in the house (and - barely - more than 10 IPs). I keep an eye on what they are doing but it's always nice to have a backup [;)]

    I suspect that the home users are as varied in their requirements as small businesses and THAT is the problem. I doubt that a simple feature deletion will really meet all requirements.

    it will always be an difficult task for astaro no matter what free home version they are gone provide us there will always be people who can't use them...

    and the creation of many version means more work for version management.

    If I could get a version with unlimited IPs/connections and no virus/spam filter/web filter, or even just increased amounts (say 25/10000) over the currrent 10/1000 I would use it.  I don't really need any of those things and probably a couple others as it is after all a honest to god home network.

    I use gmail so spam is more or less covered, I can get virus scanning on my machine after the firewall and I have no children to worry about the web filtering for.

    I just want to be able to put all my various internet gadgets online.
