New home user licensing more limited on V7..

This new v7 licensing is really unfortunate.  I've been using ASL for years now.  I liked using it at home so much I bought a 25 user license for my company.  I can say one thing for cetain, I am not going to stay up to date on multiple firewalls...  I don't have time for that.  Once I'm up to speed on the new home solution, and when my business license expires, I can guarantee my business firewall will also move to that solution.

Astaro: People who install ASL on a home box aren't the type of people for whom 10IPs is sufficient, nor 1000 concurrent connections for bittorrent which is now a mainstream app.

Now, for my obligatory list of IPs:
4: Virtual Machines under VMWare (I like to play with different OS's)
2: Servers (fileserver, mail/web server)
2: Desktop PCs
2: Laptops
2: Cell phones
2: TiVo
1: Wireless AP
1: Printer
1: PDA
1: VOIP
1: DAP (Microsoft Zune -- hey, it was free)
1: XBox

20 IPs that my $50 Linksys router handled just fine since there is infrequent concurrent use.  I moved to ASL because BitTorrent took the Linksys router to its knees.

Here is a modest proposal that will go unanswered...  Please bring the home license up to date with the reality of your home users.  15 IPs, 2500 concurrent connections.

That's not enough to totally cover me personally, but it is closer to reality and would be easier to work with.  A "Power Users" license would be ideal, but I honestly see your point of not offering it because of potential abuse by small businesses.  (Note: I only assumed "your point" because you haven't given this forum the courtesy of a response).

I'm afraid, they/Astaro won't do anything for a power user license. Why? Quite easy to say: There are so many users from community being testing the current beta 7.100 that they don't need to offer a new license model for "home power users".

Yes Ipcop has a nice add-on feature set of mods. Basically a code fork of
Smoothwall. Do you like Ipcop better than Astaro because of home use features or mainly in general? Have not looked at Ipcop in a long time, is snort
still an Ids or has it changed?

I use ipcop for my SMB clients exclusively.  I now run astaro v7 here at the house for evaluations as my ipcop product is highly mature and stable.  The costs for My clients for Astaro licenses would be prohibitively expensive as they are an annual cost.

I'm also disappointed about the lack of a Power User License. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that Astaro is willing to give away a free license, but I just feel that there is nothing in between a free license and the first commercially available license.

I would be more than willing to pay a reasonable amount ($50/yr or something) for a Power User License. The only thing that would really interest me is an upgraded number of IP's. In todays world, 10 IP's is just not sufficient for any IT minded person. Let's face it, someone who is not into IT will not run the ASL solution at home and will just go with the default broadband router that is supplied by his/her provider.

An example of what I have at home:
2 Laptops (both have separate IP's for wired and wireless) (4 IP's)
1 Firewall (Inside IP is counted!) (1 IP)
1 PC (1 IP)
1 Playstation 3 (1 IP)
1 Internet Server (Web, Mail, etc) (1 IP)
1 Media-Player PC (1 IP)
1 PSP (that accesses the internet over WiFi) (1 IP)
1 iPaq (that accesses the internet over WiFi) (1 IP)
1 Wireless Accesspoint (that uses NTP) (1 IP)
1 Printer (1 IP)
1 Fileserver (1 IP)
1 Alarm Radio (That is attached over WiFi) (1 IP)

This alone adds up to 15 IP's and if I look at all the devices that will become IP enabled, this list will just grow and grow over the coming years. I would love to have the option to run about 25 IP's (or maybe even 50) behind the ASL solution. I'm certain that the Power Users will give back in the form of bug-reports, etc. and it will not cost Astaro any business. A simple text in the EULA indicating that this is for personal use only (no commercial use), should be more than sufficient for any SMB company to purchase an official license.

I'm hoping that Astaro cares about it's early adopters and power users enough to change the VERY tight rules of the free home user license or introduce an affordable Power User license for home usage.

Wow, I was researching this new licensing issue, and just found this thread.  Read through many pages of it, and I had no idea how bad it was!  Definitely explains the problems I'm seeing with v7.  

The reason I was researching it is because I need to know how to go about resetting the current license count?  In v6, there was a button that allowed me to clear the existing license table (and, of course, reboot the machine).  I can't seem to find that button any more.

I'm actually asking this for a friend of mine who is running into this new v7 licensing issue quite badly.  (My home usage requirements are small enough that I'm not too affected.)  In his house he has himself, his wife, and his *five* kids, each with their own computers, not to mention their wi-fi enabled phones, etc.  You can only imagine how often he's running into the v7 licensing restriction.  He mentioned to me that he's having to reboot the machine almost daily now (due to duplicate licenses, etc, which have been mentioned by other folks in this thread), and rebooting doesn't always seem to do the trick for him.  With v6, now and then he just had to log in and hit the reset licenses button, but apparently that's not an option any more.  

Any suggestions on that?  If things really are as bad as they seem, I'll definitely look into this Untangle product I've seen a few people mention.  I've been using Astaro for many years, and it'll be hard to leave, but the new licensing system might force the issue. [:(]

License reset is still available on the system, however it requires a bit of digging to locate.  Note this "digging" applies to doing command line changes which according to support isn't supported...

But as a home use license doesn't have support other than our friends here on the UBB here goes:

Login with ssh client: loginuser, su to root

License counter and user exceeded flags will now be blank and new IPs can fill up the system quickly again [;)]

Cath, thank you very much.  My friend isn't too technical (I have to show him how to do most of this stuff), so I'd probably have to somehow script that if he were to be able to use it.  Know of any way to make a script that would handle working inside that cc utility?  If so, I could probably set up a cron job to run it daily for him.

I figured that might be the case.  Hmm... I'll just make up some clear instructions and let him decide if he wants to do that rather than just reboot the machine.  [:)]  Just to confirm:  using this method (the cc utility) does *not* require a reboot, right?  It would appear that it does not, but I haven't tested it yet.
