New home user licensing more limited on V7..

And still no power users license... its been a good last 4 years, but now I must bow out...

Well, I read the release notes, and it looks like 10 user/10 ip addresses, with 1000 concurrent connections... however, it looks like they can shut down connections when it goes above %110 of usage on the 1000 user license now, and I am wondering if this will also happen with the 10 user license....

"Home-Use Licenses 
We will continue offering a Home-Use package. The new V7 package will be free of charge and will now include the base license, all subscriptions and Astaro Up2Date. But it will be limited to 10 IPs/10 Users, and 1000 concurrent connections.  
Note: Astaro will provide no support to home users and they need to agree to participate in Astaro’s Threat Research Network."

Within ASG software the limits for maximum IPs / users are now enforced in the following 
way: 
• The administrator will get an email notification if the IP limit is reached. 
• At that time new IPs / users will still be accepted up to a maximum of 110% 
of the licensed number of IPs (grace limit) 
• If the grace limit is reached no more IPs / users will be accepted

    Wow, I was researching this new licensing issue, and just found this thread.  Read through many pages of it, and I had no idea how bad it was!  Definitely explains the problems I'm seeing with v7.  

    The reason I was researching it is because I need to know how to go about resetting the current license count?  In v6, there was a button that allowed me to clear the existing license table (and, of course, reboot the machine).  I can't seem to find that button any more.

    I'm actually asking this for a friend of mine who is running into this new v7 licensing issue quite badly.  (My home usage requirements are small enough that I'm not too affected.)  In his house he has himself, his wife, and his *five* kids, each with their own computers, not to mention their wi-fi enabled phones, etc.  You can only imagine how often he's running into the v7 licensing restriction.  He mentioned to me that he's having to reboot the machine almost daily now (due to duplicate licenses, etc, which have been mentioned by other folks in this thread), and rebooting doesn't always seem to do the trick for him.  With v6, now and then he just had to log in and hit the reset licenses button, but apparently that's not an option any more.  

    Any suggestions on that?  If things really are as bad as they seem, I'll definitely look into this Untangle product I've seen a few people mention.  I've been using Astaro for many years, and it'll be hard to leave, but the new licensing system might force the issue. [:(]

    License reset is still available on the system, however it requires a bit of digging to locate.  Note this "digging" applies to doing command line changes which according to support isn't supported...

    But as a home use license doesn't have support other than our friends here on the UBB here goes:

    Login with ssh client: loginuser, su to root

    ** deleted **

    License counter and user exceeded flags will now be blank and new IPs can fill up the system quickly again [;)]

    Wow, I just read through the entire thread and I have to admit I was surprised by all of the feedback. IMHO, I think we are being a little harsh.

    Here are my thoughts:

    - Astaro 7 is a fantastic product, I just installed it and I was nicely surprised with what they give for free out of the box (Antispam, etc) vs V6. 
    - The AJAX rich client like interface is kick A**
    - QOS, support for multiple WAN interfaces (OSPF, etc)
    - The application workflow improvements are fantastic (Like when defining rules, etc)
    - system build from scratch is quick, up and running in like 10 minutes or so.

    And they give us all of this for free???? I realize 1000 concurrent connections is a little lame if you are a torrent fiend, but I am happy with the product, and I certainly will not have any issue reccomending this product to any of my clients.


    EXACTLY my feelings.

    Show me ANY other firewall vendor, (I am talking commercial here folks, so let's not include the stuff like IPCOP), which gives away a free version of their product, let a lone a free version that includes all the addons, such as antivirus, antispam, url filtering, for home use. 

    I know of none.

    Even the 1000 concurrent can be lived with. 

    It would be nice to be able to have more than 10 ips.. 15 would be sweet, or the ability to assign MAC addresses to the license pool to guarantee that certain devices would always be able to work.

    The home license limits are disappointing. I have 4 pc's (4 kids, mum & dad) three sip phones and a couple of internal extras (aiport etc) I exceed the 10IP's despite the fact there are not 10IP's using the internet and the the default DHCP leases screw it up even more (perhaps i could change dhcp.conf) but it demonstrates how restrictive the license is.

    In case you are wondering, at work my company licenses 50 IP's. 

    ATM I am seriously looking at alternatives...I am feeling a real squeeze in terms of 

    1. Increased commercial license fees
    2. Restrictive home licensing. Using Astaro at home is a is a reward for paying for the real product in addition to Astaro's 'recognition' of its open source 
    3. A lack of commitment to even keep abreast of later kernels and therefore hardware support. The V7 HCL is dismal.

    PS. I have been using the product for many years and looking at these forums for a long time (alas ...a lurker?). This is a new login I am using.

    For home use where you need more IPs, you might try pfSense. We are specifically looking at it for it's multi WAN capabilities.

    Just give us the ability to purchase more IP's, but with no support.  I would be willing to do that.

    1IP + 100 concurrent connections = $5 or something like that.

    Active Beta testers get free 25-ip or 50-ip home user licenses.
