New home user licensing more limited on V7..

And still no power users license... its been a good last 4 years, but now I must bow out...

Well, I read the release notes, and it looks like 10 user/10 ip addresses, with 1000 concurrent connections... however, it looks like they can shut down connections when it goes above %110 of usage on the 1000 user license now, and I am wondering if this will also happen with the 10 user license....

"Home-Use Licenses 
We will continue offering a Home-Use package. The new V7 package will be free of charge and will now include the base license, all subscriptions and Astaro Up2Date. But it will be limited to 10 IPs/10 Users, and 1000 concurrent connections.  
Note: Astaro will provide no support to home users and they need to agree to participate in Astaro’s Threat Research Network."

and this from the 1000 user section...

Within ASG software the limits for maximum IPs / users are now enforced in the following 
way: 
• The administrator will get an email notification if the IP limit is reached. 
• At that time new IPs / users will still be accepted up to a maximum of 110% 
of the licensed number of IPs (grace limit) 
• If the grace limit is reached no more IPs / users will be accepted

    Do I understand home use correctly for v7.
    Per Gert:

    This means free Anti-Virus, free Anti-Spam, free URL-Filter, ... etc.

    And only 1000 concurrent connections where v6 is 32,000, lost on this?
    I am okay with 10 ip's, but connections?
    Maybe I am just misunderstanding this.

    What does a DoS attack have to do with outbound concurrent connections? Are you DoS'ing people? 

    I have probably one of the larger home networks on this forum, with several machines online at any given time, my wife using Emule, myself using BT on two machines, plus playing online gaming.

    What do I hit for a max concurrennt connections? Apprioximately 2500. So yes, 1000 is a bit low, but really, how many people have a home network very big?

    My office LAN, which has approx. 100 users, barely goes above 1000. Maybe it hits 1100. That is with over 150 machines!

    If you have limit 10IP, isn t this limit ok? Why would you limit internet connection?

    With 1 torrent i have 1200 connection. 

    How "big" internet line do you have?

    About dos attack. Do you have any server? DNS server + attack or email + attack? how many connection, 1000? 
    Each of these packets are handled like a connection request, causing on 1000 connection limited?

    Internet connection = 100 Meg Fiber, full duplex.

    Yes I have DNS server, and email, but they are HOME servers. This is a HOME license.

    Ok! lets all pull it out and see who's bigger....

    Guys, the point is for the average home user 1000 concurrent connections is more than enough (the two of you are exceptions.....).

    Whats worries me more is that IP devices are becoming more and more popular in the home, the 10 IP limit can quickly be met in a house using all the latest gadgets.

    Home security, media servers, TiVo's (PVR's), IP enabled appliances, home automation (smart homes), VOIP phones, etc....

    Free for home use at 10 IP's with the security services enabled is FANTASTIC, try and find someone else who offers this....you wont, not for freee.

    However, maybe a power user license would be ideal for a home user to allow for additional IP's and more concurrent connections, maybe a one time upgrade? Its up to Astaro to decide.

    Well besides doing some "freelance" beta-testing of Astaro software here, some of us test other products as well, beyond the gadget addiction that I have, so it would be ideal to have more than 10 for special cases...  I forsee trouble with my network now that enforcement is in place...

    here is the current list of devices on my network...

    1 Macbook pro (running Parallel's Workstation VM software... more ip's here)
    1 Compaq laptop
    1 hp laptop
    1 Vista Media Center Ultimate Edition system
    1 Vista Workstation
    1 Windows XP Workstation
    1 Windows 2003 Server R2

    1 Linksys PAP for Vonage
    1 HP 2510 IP printer (yes, shouldn't need internet here)

    1 Nintendo Wii
    I have ditched a few devices such as Tivo, Replay TV device, and some other media devices.  I do have multiple switches and whatnot, but they shouldn't need internet access as well.
    So at any given time, I am averaging under 20, and that isn't all at the same time, but the problem is they don't drop off after they access the net... 

    And before someone says "why not nat some of those"... that isn't a solution, and only a kludge that may work for some.

    I guess I will have to start finding another solution that I am willing to PAY FOR!

    My current v6 licence allows for 32000 concurrent connections, dropping it to a 1000 per user might just stretch things a little bit for some of the games etc. I think for the 1st time we went over or close to 4000 with 3 users on using v7, under v6 it was never an issue count never went anywhere near that high.

    It would appear that Astaro have changed the way connections are counted.

    At the busiest time my home LAN will have 6 devices accessing the internet with another 3 devices providing network printing and wireless access point. 2 of the devices require 2 IP because they use both wireless and cable and then you add the mandatory ASG internal interface and without trying too hard you have 11 IPs.
    So how to reduce the count, make sure the laptops are assigned the Same IP for both wireless and ethernet connections.

    No room for expansion with the new counting scheme.

    Forgot that I am trying to add a VOIP box when I change ISPs later in the year. Looking like a couple of boxes will have to go behind a NAT'd box.

    Yeah, we have the same issue with laptops.  Most staff here (say 20-30 have laptops, each chews TWO IP addresses as they wander from cabled to wireless connections.)

    Most users run both at the same time, although I guess only the first "active" connection is the one used for routing.  Still though, we are using a lot of extra IP addresses we don't need to...  But this is difficult to solve on our side if we need to maintain conveniance for end-users.

    FWIW, 
    I currently (and normally) have 1 Win2000 PC running eMule and Azureus (BitTorrent). A development webserver/fileserver is currently idle, and has been for days. My other computers are all off, and are only used for casual surfing anyways.

    ASL V5 shows I am using over 5600 connections in the "connection tracking table"!

    Well, I agree that the 10 IP limit is a bit too low..  

    Here is what I have running that needs internet access:

    1 Win3k Server (Serving 2.5TB of Audio/Video)
    2 XP Workstations
    2 XP Laptops
    2 XBOX's running XBMC
    1 Vonage VOIP Router
    1 TiVo Box
    1 Webcam

    That's 10 already.. and I'm sure I missed something.. That leaves me with no room to grow.. and if they say they start blocking at 110%, that means with a 10 IP license it will start blocking at 11.

    I would pay a resonable fee to upgrade to a littler bigger version.. say 20 IP's

    As to the 1000 connection limit.. I can reach that easy.. (Bittorrent) I usually have 800 connections just on one Torrrent machine..

    Trustix doesn't look like it is free.  You should check out PFSense which includes a good firewall, small footprint, Snort and VPN.

    Doesn't have content filter though but I may switch to it anyway after my v6 subscription runs out unless v7 hasn't improved by leaps and bounds.

    The new home user license suxs really bad, new features does not compensate the lack of concurrent connections.
    I’m over the 1000 proposed in the new license so... Astaro this was a bad decision.
    Regarding the other matter IP count, 10 IPs are correct but they should be count in the Wan interface only when they generate traffic.

    This discussion is taking nowhere if we don't and ask specifics to Astaro.

    Mi Proposal is this:

    1 - Extend to original 32000 concurrent connections.
    2 - Count IPs in the Wan interface and only when traffic is generated.

    Right now I have to stay in V6 until this matter will be result or painfully migrate to something else.

    Astaro, please take notice to this two items, none of them are going to mayor expand the Home License but they are going to suit most of us.

    and working with a lot of vendors, I can tell you the following: 

    Companies who provide software to home users run the risk of having their support overwhelmed by home user support. Given the complexity of the Astaro software, they run an even higher risk. 

    As an example, look at Symantec's Antivirus support. They provide AV on nearly every Windows computer sold by a manufacturer, yet they simply cannot provide the level of support that the product requires, so they don't. 

    Given that, it's not in Astaro's best interest to provide everyone with everything they want in the area of a 'free' home user license. If they don't see a return on it, they simply can't afford to provide home user licenses that meet everyone's needs. 

    They're providing a home user license that will allow 10 IP addresses and in V7, web content filtering, anti-spam. That's not bad. Does it fit everyone? No, but if it doesn't why do you continue to expect them to give the stuff away for nothing when it will only cost them more to do so? What does Astaro get out of it? 

    We are an Astaro reseller (along with a host of other vendors, including Sophos), but I don't say this as an Astaro reseller, I say it as someone who's had a long history of dealing with vendors in our industry.
