Differences between ASG & ASG VMware Appliance?

Hey All,

I've dug around a bit and cannot find a clear answer. Can someone please enlighten me, in non-marketing speak, what is the difference, if any, between the regular ASG download and the ASG virtual appliance? Does the virtual appliance come with VMware Tools installed already? Is there a difference between using the appliance and simply installing ASG in VMware?

    I'm not entirely positive, but it looks like the standard ASG 6.300 install includes the VMware Tools if it detects VMware devices.

    I recently installed VMware 6.300 to a VMware ESX virtual machine and it works quite well-- same performance versus physical machine as far as I can tell so far.  The VM heartbeat is registering which tells me the VMware tools are present for ESX.  I have also done a test install to VMware workstation with the same ASG version for the initial tests.  After install, VMware Workstation actually reports that the "VMware Tools are oudated" rather than they need to be installed.

    That's kindof what I was thinking...as of a certain version it has the tools built-in for when running in VMware. Did you happen to try the pre-made Astaro appliance in comparison with simply installing from the ISO?

    Since I wrote that last post, I checked up on the Astaro 6.301 standard install to the ESX virtual machine...

    Everything appears to be good but the VM's clock is lagging behind by about 4 hours!  It was just installed and in sync about 16 hours ago. [:)]

    A quick search showed this to be normal, especially for running any kind of Linux under an virtual machine with multiple virtual processors (which I am).  So, I downloaded the pre-packaged Astaro 6.202 build for ESX servers and will try that out in the next day or so.  The pre-packaged image for ESX actually has to be deployed to the server with VMware's VirtualCenter system, so I'll have to see about an eval copy of that or something.  I'm assuming the ESX-specific version will take care of any little problems like the time sync.  Look for a followup post in the next couple of days.

    I downloaded the ESX image for Astaro ASG 6.202 and deployed it to our ESX server.  My first complaint is I didn't like how it does the machine build.  The image constrains you to a 30GB installation if you use the image as a template, per their instructions.  I went through the recommended installation process, but had several virtual hardware config problems after installing to ESX 2.5.3.  I soon gave up and went back to building it manually.

    When installing manually with the standard ASG 6.300 ISO, everything went smoothly.  The only issue I ran into after the installation was that that the clock in the Astaro VM was significantly slow... losing around 3-4 hours in about 12 real hours.  A quick check of VMware support and I discovered this is common with Linux VM's, especially when running with multiple virtual processors, which I am.  So, I made the recommended change on the ESX Server:

    Change the system option "Misc.TimerHardPeriod" from 1000 to 333

    After making this change, the clock is perfectly in sync with the ESX host without even needing to reboot the host or Astaro VM.  The performance and function of Astaro in an ESX virtual machine has been as good as on a physical machine.

    From what I can tell, whatever is integrated into the virtual appliance is built into the latest 6.3 ISO. Using the new VMware Virtual Server, I built an ASG from the latest ISO, and mounted the virtual appliance. Both systems seemed to boot the same, and both systems seemed to have VMware Tools, but were out of date.

    It would be really great if 6.300 did have VMTools installed in it also.  The VMWare version of 6.202 looks like a pain.

    I'll try it out later (I have VMWare Server) and report back.

    Okay, I just loaded VMware Server on the system in my signature.  So the setup is like this.

    CentOS 4.3 (minimal install) -> VMware Server 1.0.0 -> Astaro v6.301

    The 6.300 ISO did indeed include VMware Tools, although it is an older version.  But now it constantly uses all of the processors speed instead of barely any.

    None of the other VMs have this issue, any thoughts?

    I don't understand your problems. You can just import or make a VM of the template or copy the VMDK-file, configure it or restore your backup and then update to 6.301. You don't have to stick with 6.202 just because it is a "special virtual appliance". It is a preinstalled version of ASG that has some VMware related mods. I am running 6.301 in a VM on ESX without any problems.

    I tested around with vmware, astaro and debian.
    works fine. there is no difference between the funktionality.
    BUT the PPPOE was not working!
