MSN Messenger creates own IP?

Hello out there,

some of my (new) users use MSN Messenger, and since then I discovered a new IP-Lease is my license list: This IP is NOT part of my defined DHCP range, and it regularly connects to rad.msn.com. I also found out that rad.msn.com delivers the ads for MSN Messenger and blocking the internal IP by dropping all packets has no negative effect on MSN Messenger on the clients (except no ads any more, which some might find positive).

But still I'm a little bit worried about that: Why can ASL accept an IP address which is not distributed by DHCP or a pre-defined static one, isn't that a security lag? How can I tell ASL only to accept IPs from DHCP or static routes?

    The most effective way I have found of blocking stray network connections is to put filters in that only allow approved IPs, that includes the HTTP proxy as well. One of my sons had some software )approved ip tunnel) to connect ot his uni and it generated a large number of spoofed IP addresses. Stopped it dead in its tracks, only allowed one through.
    As I have a wireless AP on my network it provides some degree of security from being hacked and my internet access used for illegal purposes.

    It does take considerable effort to setup and get correct, but if done properly allows easy management of user access eg addition or removal of devices, replacement of NICs etc.
