Here's what I did this evening...

I got tired of the stupid VPN screwing up so I thought I'd check the forum and see if anyone else is tired of the same thing. Well, everyone is but someone mentioned trying the astaro client. OK, where's the download for this? What? I have an account already? OK, uhm, ya, it's not the forum name it's my email address. OK. So there is a difference between my registered "handle" and my email address. This means I have two logins to various bits of astaro: my email addy and it's password and my forum addy and it's password. Which one am I requesting a password for again?

OK. I can deal with that.

Logon to my email addy, the one attached to all my licensing stuff. OK, I can fish through the menus finally and find "astaro client download." Fair enough. It's stupid, but I guess I have to deal with the fact that I have four bits of information I have to drag around to try to read and post to the forum and then possibly download stuff. Great.

Install astaro client. This works fine. Try to decipher the menus. Not so fine. I'm coming from the "road warrior" FAQ to the astaro client. It's cool there are so many options flying around in the astaro client, but  I am coming from the road warrior FAQ to the astaro client. Please take a look at the road warrior FAQ and then fire up the astaro client. You may notice there is no way on earth I can set up the astaro client in the same way I set up the standard XP vpn stuff.

I give up.

I'd like to turn off the astaro client and possibly read some docs when I'm not so pissed off and I haven't been up for 14 hours. Silly me,  there is no way to tell the astaro client to just shut up and go away for the time being. I don't necessarily want to uninstall it I just want it to shut up so I can connect normally and do my night-night email check. Apparently this can't be done either.

I'm not a happy camper tonight.

    Now all vpn connections fail due to "failure to encrypt data."

    I'm so glad I installed the astaro secure vpn client. Now that I don't have my XP disks with me I can't even re-format to get out of the driver hell the client software has put me in. Thanks!

    [/ QUOTE ] Actually, if it is Windows XP pro that you are running, you can go Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore, and reset your PC using a restore point dated prior to the problematic Astaro VPN client install. That will remove everything that the client install did to any system files and to the registry configuration. Windows XP pro automatically generates a restore point every time you install new software.

    u probably tried remove drivers etc.. manually .. just use the uninstall option [[:P]]

    there is a easy fix for every single problem u just discribed above... why are u first complaining ?? just post your questions.

    ok here is a small respons to your problems: 
    try http://www.astaro.com/kb and for the howto's etc..
    there is a dedicated section with all the info u will ever need [[:P]]

    temporary disabling the client: simply stop the 2 ncp services running the names of the services both start with ncp****

    this probably just as simple: just start the "IPSec services"

    K, NCP***. Glad that's in the KB somewhere.

    Yes you are correct about the IPSEC service.

    However, without a slavish knowledge of the client how the heck is someone supposed to know you stop the NCP*** services then re-enable the ipsec stuff it automatically disables?

    There is also ZERO information regarding how to make the astaro client identical to the xp client AND there is no information regarding how to shut the stupid thing off without uninstalling.

    The main problem is the only time I am running this is offsite, and then I have a bazillion problems that I have zero control over. This is uber-frustrating.

    Oh, do a KB search on NO_PROPOSAL_CHOSEN and see how man fabulous things you can play with to get this error to go away. LOL.
