So, I unexpectedly used up my evaluation period and rushed to get 2 (10 Device) licenses from Novell. Two Security Manager (Astaro 6) installations VPN'd together.
Novell issued one license key that apparently is a dual license. So, I proceeded to install the same license on the second server. Well gosh darn, all heck broke loose. I couldn't get the machine back online. I even went as far to reimage the system from the Install Disks and applied a saved configuration. Of course, I had to patch the system before I could install my config. Anyway, the PUBLIC nic designated as the gateway refused to list itself as the DEFAULT VIA in the network report. And it was configured as the default gateway.
Since I had two public nics on different statics, it eventually dawned on me to set the other nic as the default gateway. Wouldn't you know it worked. So maybe...
- A bad NiC - nope, swapped out with good nic
- A bad wire - nope, swapped out with good wire
- A bad IP address - nope, tried another IP address
- A bad PCI slot - nope, tried it in a different PCI slot
- A bad combination of h/w pieces - nope, tried fully changed out
- A bad MAC – nope, router was happy with every nic
- Bad rules, intrusion, or VPN - nope, tried everything off
- Bad PUBLIC name association - yupper, that appears to be it
Every test that resulted in a problem only had the PUBLIC interface context associated with it. I could freely move the nics around, swap wires, reassociate the interfaces with various nics and every failed result pointed to the PUBLIC interface context.
So, I associated PUBLIC with a reserve NIC and created a new interface called PUBLIC_1. I set PUBLIC_1 to take over all of the rules, IP address, gateway assignment, VPN, and whatever else I could find for the problematic PUBLIC interface. With the revised assignments, PUBLIC_1 continued to work.
I'm left thinking the PUBLIC configuration got screwed up underneath the covers not apparent at the admin level. I'm also wondering if submitting the same license (listed by Novell as 2 licenses in 1) to two boxes is resulting in some form of punishment.
Please advise since I have yet to resubmit the license to the second box that is currently running in evaluation mode.
