home user license upgrade?

I think that you are spitting into the wind on this one.  I had the same problem as I have approximately 10 machines running that only crunch proteins for the Folding at Home project, 4 home family computers, 1 print server, 2 backup machines for various files in my system for around 17 - 20 computers give or take any that I am testing at any given time.

I have the 10 user license I purchased from the online store and needed more licenses.  I wrote a detailed email message to the USA sales team and tried to plead my case but they would not budge to let me get a 25 user license at a home user reduced price.  I was willing to pay a couple of hundred dollars for the extra licenses in addition to the 10 that I had with the same functions as the 10 user home license. The sales team said no and there was no way that they would allow me to get more licenses without paying the full amount plus the cost for the extra anti-virus etc. which would have been a lot.

This subject has been covered a lot in these forums as to how to add a router and then use 1 IP address and have a lot of internal computers connected to the router via witches/hubs.  I actually did this and had one access point connected to one NIC, the 10 FAH computers connected to another NIC with a router in between and the home computers connected to another router connected to the internal NIC.  All worked fine and I only used 3 IP addresses. A lot of people on this board 
actually helped me get this running.

In the end I just finally decided to purchase a Cisco PIX firewall which solved the problem completely and I got a 50 user license with a one year service maintenance contract. I gave up functionality the Astaro system provided but I am happy never the less and the network is much easier to manage now without the work arounds to the licensing limitations.

Anyway good luck and try the router work around. I really enjoyed using Astaro and I have recommended it to many people.  The price for the home user license purchased off of the online shop can't be beat and I do appreciate the fact that Astaro is letting home users purchase a 10 user home license extremely cheap.  But in the end it comes to a point where the end user must make a decision to continue with the Astaro license limitation, do the router work around, proxy route or go elsewhere for the solution to the licensing problem.

You can do what i havee done.  i have installed Ipcop and added the copfilter addon.  for clients that needed content filtering I also install the copplus addon.  For outgoing filtering you at the BOT addon. There is a specific order involved for these to work..but they do work..[:)]  The integration is not there as it is with Astaro but you get the functionality you are looking for minus the anoerous sales policies.

Computer in Living Room
Computer in Kitchen area
Computer for each of 5 person household
Computer in any number of other rooms.
Etc.   It's real easy to get to 20 pc's accessing the internet in today's average home.

Is there the option to buy an home use license without antivirus support? just up2date with system updates and IPS updates?

My license is runing out on 01/06/2007 whats then?

i don't want to buy a license for one year and just use the half functions of them...

Remember also that it won't be long (and in some cases is happening now) that many of the devices we use in our homes will use the Internet for reporting, diagnosticts, etc.  I.e. your refigerator could e-mail you a daily temperature report.  Smarthomes.com has many devices that use the Net as part of their function so sooner or later 10 IP's won't be enough.

Up2date and (currently) IPS updates are available in the free home-user license.

Yes i know. But these features are timely limited. My license key shows this: Up2Date Service     Valid from 01/06/2004 until 01/06/2007

so i think, that i am not able to download new up2date packages after this date???
Can i reactivate these feature if it runs out for free?

By that time Astaro v8 might be out so you can backup your version, download Astaro v8, apply for a new home license, install Astaro v8, import old settings, configure new settings, done!

yes you have right...2 years is long time... then i have to upgrade my hardware. with the internet connection in the year 2007 this is also needed.

I'm considering ordering a www.sonos.com home music distribution system.  Each remote controller and each room device have individual DHCP sourced IP addresses.  3 amps and 2 controllers eat up 5 of my 10 allowed IPs, and I haven't turned on a computer yet.  With my LAN running at 6 already, I don't want to go over my home limit.  I hope they realize the world is changing, and find a way to work with "smarthome" users....

I doubt your controllers need internet access.  I have devices on my network that never touch the internet, so they don't count against the 10 allowed IPs.

Besides, you can always add another router to your internal network and hide those devices using NAT.
