Why is this site so slow?

With or without an Astaro firewall this site is extremely slow. Is noticably more so today, but has been getting slower and slower over the last couple of weeks.
I look at the network lights on the router and there is no activity for long periods of time.
I thought I was having problems with throughput caused by 2 NICs sharing an interrupt, so installed extra memory and another NIC. Re-built the machine.
When my kids are playing games on-line the overall connection response is very poor. I have them on low priority in the filters, but the proxy performance is not affected by the filter setup.
It isn't as if I don't have sufficient horsepower to process the packets as the arrive in the firewall.
My ADSL link is 512/128.

    It isn't with me, tested several provider (ADSL/SDSL), must be something at your providers' side...

    I too find that it is frequently slow or even unavailable.
    I have experienced this from several locations and not just from my home in Texas/USA.

    I just try again later and I can usually connect.

    for what its worth, these forums are hosted in Germany.

    thank yopu for the confirmation. This morning it is screaming along.
    Last night I implemented the proxies in IE, it made slight difference to this site, but a huge difference to a number of other sites.
    Looks like their ISP has some bandwidth issues.

    For me it seems this site is probably one of the slowest I have visited for a long time. I havent done any traces to try and identify where the problem lies, or if its just a routing problem from Astaro.org to Australia.....

    It caries considerably. Some days it is extermely slow other days it is relatively quick. Since my initial complaint the performance has improved no end.

    It has to be network and not my end, because I don't see any activity on my network lights to show it is being loaded into the firewall before being passed to my PC.

    I have found it hasn`t improved. I am not using any firewall, and this site is still the most slowest site I have ever visited.
    It is serious for me to state, this site is far slower than anything I have been to even on 33K dialup. Other sites in other countries are much, much faster than this one.

    Well there must be some pretty crappy net connections leading out of .au . I am in Canada, and visit these forums several times per day from at least four different locations, all on different ISPs, and it is lightning fast..

    My 6mbit connection at home, 2mbit at work, 10mbit at my colo facility, and 10mbit from my other office all are nice and fast. I never wait anymore than about half a second for the pages to load.

    Well gee there ya go, maybe if we all had 6 MBit connections things might be good.

    Well, I've only got a 1.5mbs connection, and the site generally loads pretty fast. Have you looked at the route the traffic takes between you and astaro vs. other sites?

    I think there is a bit of network congestion within my ISPs feeder network. The performance dies from about 1600-2030, but this site seems to suffer the most. It can go from blindingly fast to extermely slow.
    At the moment is isn't the fastest I have seen it operate at, but it isn't that slow either.
    I have a 512/128 ADSL link.

    I am down here in Tassie and do not find it "that" slow at all. I have a 2mb/2mb Telstra link here. Also have a 1.5M/256k Netspace link at home. Both use different back-haul providers and it seems ok for me.

    Time to break out the tracerouts. Not sure how much help it will be, since they are mostly aimed at the US, but

    has a Line Packet Loss Test that can help ID possible problem routers with latency or packet loss problems.

    Wow, the latency is right up there (I get arround 200ms to astaro204.timenet.de), though that by itself shouldn't cause the problem.

    There seems to be something up with the route from you to German sites. I tried a couple more traceroutes from telestra's traceroute gateway http://www.telstra.net/cgi-bin/trace (which goes through the same 10GigabitEthernet2-2.syd-core01.Sydney.net.reach.com router as you to reach the outside world)  and had problems getting it to complete a trace to either Astaro or www.asus.de. www.amd.com and www.bbc.co.uk didn't seem to have problems (and had lower latencies as well). Trying another provider  http://traceroute.teragen.com.au/cgi-bin/trace , Taragen doesn't seem to have the same problem. I attached the traceroutes.

    Looking at where the routes diverge and converge, one could guess that the problem lies between i-12-3.wil-core02.net.reach.com and ffm-s2-rou-1073.DE.eurorings.net, but it's just that, a guess, based on a limited snapshot of data.

    It doesn't show lots of detail, but   http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm gives a general idea of connectivity and router status. And right now Australia isn't scoring so great.

    Have you talked to your ISP and asked them why you have problems reaching this site?
