How do you stop V6.x asking for F2 during reboot?

Didn't have this problem with V5.x. It has only started with v6.x I have upgraded the BIOS, seems to have got rid of one problem. V6 takes a long time to boot, somewhere over 5 minutes and most of that appears to be sitting waiting for a timeout, but if I press f2 it runs through the boot process very quickly.

Will put the monitor and keyboard back on it tomorrow and time it and note what happens.
This motherboard wasn't reliable as a XP box, but now only has one memory card, slower processor and a production BIOS.

How was it not reliable as an xp box?  That speaks volumes to me in terms of it's potential suitability as a firewall.

The manufacturers, Giga-byte admitted after much hassling (took 12 months) that the motherboard needed to use slower memory. We were running it well within published specifications. We had used it in a XP pro and XP home machine and it would spontaneously re-boot.
Since then I have upgraded the BIOS to the production version, I am only using 1 memory card of 512mb, the processor is a 2800+ rather than the 3200+ I had and the 3000+ my son had in it.
I didn't get an opportunity to test it today, that has become tomorrow morning's task to watch what happens during the boot cycle. If I can avoid it I don't want to have to buy a new motherboard, but I suspect this one is for the re-cycling bin before I get my new scanner, bummer.

Put it through its paces this morning, not happy with the results. Firstly there was an issue with network reporting that stopped after V6.002 was installed, then it wouldn't boot cleanly, so did a complete reset of the BIOS, defaults and something else. Went through and re-configured it.
Re-booted it from webadmin and bingo straight through no hangups, no intervention required, very quick boot compared with what I had been getting.
What I don't understand is why it only started with V6.x

Will give it a severe testing over the next couple of days and try to force it to crash again. (the mb not astaro)

[/ QUOTE ]v6 is 2.6 kernel based and other changes.  It is going to be more demanding of the hardware then v5 and much more demanding than v4.  Putting more demands on the system is a perfect way to see if the hardware is up to snuff.  Have you check your p/s?  About 50% of the time mobo problems are p/s not mobo.

Brand new heavy duty fanless 350 watt power supply, gets warm but not hot.
So far it has been behaving itself since the bIOS was totallty reset and re-configured.
V6.x sure chews through the ram. Peaking at nearly 400mb with 5 users. I expect when I get the configuration under control and remove some logging memory use will drop.

350 watts for an Athlon64?  No wonder its acting sutpid.  put at least 400..i would go 450 in there for that.  Also linux is going to use all available ram for caching.  Don't worry about that..what's your swap usage?  That's the one to watch.

I agree, a 350 is kinda minimal for an A64 CPU. Also keep in mind that the total output rating of a power supply is only part of the story. You can have a power supply with more than enough total power, but it must also be able to supply enough power for each individual voltage. 500W doesn't help if it's all on the 12V line and the 5V doesn't have enough power.

Also, if you suspect that system may have memory related issues, you may want to try to eliminate them without ASL in the picture.  http://www.memtest.org/ has a self booting memory test that fits on a floppy or CD that will highlight any memory related problems.

the 350 watt is a real power supply. It has more than enough grunt for the configuration it is in. It doesn't get more than handholdable warm under load.
The ram usage was a concern, but i removed a couple of extra configs which I had to see what happened and it dropped to about 350mb. Swap usage 0.
Since the total reset and reconfiguration it has worked flawlessly, nothing gets very hot at all.
I am very happy with the configuration, it is also very quiet, though not as quiet as my main PC. The firewall has 3 fans, while my main PC has 7.
If this mb starts playing up again I have another mb selected to go in its place.
