NTLM-Authentication and small internet tools

Hi there,

since I changed our system from "Local user" authentication to NTLM on a Windows 2003 Server Domain, users complain that all the small internet tools like GetRight or Klipfolio freeze or do other strange things when trying to use proxy connections with usernames like "domain\user". Browsers or e.g. RealPlayer work fine with that.
How do I get that to work? (without switching back to "Local user" authentication...)

    To use the proxy in that mode all the small internet tools you like to use have to be able to make a NTML authentication. Realplayer, Winamp and some other tools are just using the IE engine and so the ntml authentication mechanism of IE to show websites. Mozilla brings his own ntml authentication mechanism which works fine using ASL. Other tools like GetRight might not be able to make a ntml authentication. For these tools you would need a second proxy or use the socks proxy with user authentication for such tools.

    SOCKS without(!) Authentication works, if you tell GetRight to use SOCKS4. SOCKS5 doesn't work at all until now. What to do about other programs without the possibility to tell a SOCKS proxy?

    Can I use NTLM authentication in the SOCKS proxy, too? I only get a local user authentication when activating user authentication in SOCKS on WebAdmin...

    Ntml is only available in http proxy.
    If socks and http proxy in ntlm mode does not work with the programms you like to use, you have to open some ports manually in the packet filter to allow such applications to communicate.
