Could someone look at the attached CPU Load average graph and help me ascertain whether the machine in question is under very high load CPU wise or not?
A load average of 1 means that there was always 1 process waiting to get CPU time. The 15min average indicates longer usage periods (constant usage or long running processes), so you can use that as an indicator of the average load on your system. The 5min and 1min averages always have some peaks, generated by processes which did only run for a short time. Having many peaks here is not a problem. In my opinion your graph does not indicate a problem. A machine does not need to be idle most of the time to show good performance. :-)
So a 850Mhz P3 with 512MB RAM running SMTP +AV and Web+AV and IDS etc etc handling 100 clients and 20 PPTP VPNS and one site to site VPN is ok then?
We have started to notice a bit of slowdown on the http proxy since enabling the Cobion filter this week thats why I was asking.

Your signature says you are running 5.1..there are updates available to address some http proxy performance issues. That load graph you showed me looked fine. What i would be interested in is the memory and swap graphs. That may be where you may have issues.
Swap and memory usage look fine. Your cpu usage also looks good. The surf protection is going to introduce some latency just becuase the system has to scan everything that comes through.
