Reasons for Upgrading from V4 to V5 for Home User?

astaro is king of dmz's.  Just use the Nat/Masquerading feature and the packet filter..easy.  Frankly the ICSA certification was to improve enterprise reach and for home use is nothing special.  I have v4 and v5 here.  I run v5 because i do not have to hack dyndns support into v5 like i do v4.  If it were not for that reason i would still be running v4.  V4 can handle everything you are asking and then some.  You say for space/heat reasons..what are you using for your server?  


Frankly,  it appears v4 is doing everything you need it to do and can handle the additional things you are asking.  Stick with v4..[:)]

I'm just using a regular PC for Astaro.  But, it is in a small upstairs bedroom that catches all the afternoon sun along with 2-3 additional running computers.  The AC does not work too well upstairs and the room gets very warm.  I figured every little bit would help.  Plus it would free up some space on my rack.

As far as the ICSA Cert. goes... I'm a SANS GIAC Certified Firewall Analyst, So I'm pretty anal about security (even in a home environmet).  I periodically test business scenarios at home, and would prefer to use vendors that have subjected themselves to public scrutiny.  After reading the ICSA lab report on V5, there were a couple of (in my opinion) severe issues that Astaro had to fix during the testing.  I'm concerned that those fixes did not make it into V4.  (Perhaps they aren't needed on V4 either, but it would be nice to know)

As per my sig i am running a nearly fanless pc for v4/5 in a totally uncontrolled environment without isses.  Have been for nearly a year now.  ICSA gave v5 its certification and all issues( as far as the ICSA site is concerend) have been addressed and fixed.  V5 has some functionality bugs but i have not found any truly critical security bugs in my testing.  

Since you say you are anal about security(which is not a bad thing..) i would get v5 then.  if you upgrade your v4 license to v5 you should keep your 16k connection limit without problem(unless they changed the keyservers again).

Can you verify my comprehension of what I've read here in these forums.  I see that I can upgrade my V4 for free by obtaining a new license key online.  As long as I maintain a backup of my V4 config, I can re-install V4 (if I don't like V5) and restore from that backup.  Is that correct?

write down your licnese key string from your v4 installation as v5 keys are not backwards compatible.  Do this before you upgrade your v4 key to v5.  Then yes you will be able to go back and forth(i have the original keys for my licenses archived here so i can go back and forth.) v5 config files are not backwards compatible with v4..
