Feature suggestion: NNTP Proxy

Who has seen their company internet connection slow to a halt because somebody has realised they can download the lastest blockbuster movie from your ISP news server? All of us ... ok lets move on.

I have been running NNTP proxies for years now. Originally i ran NNTPcache but it caches article bodies as well and is not really suitable for a firewall.

However Newsplex is a header caching USENET proxy (for want of a better term).

It is simple to configure via config files and can allow or diallow on a per newsgroup basis.

On a company LAN it is excellent as you can tell it not to allow alt.bin and can tell it about all the legitimate NNTP feeds such as microsoft etc.

There are easily 20 available legitimate feeds to compliment your own ISP NNTP server. Once it is installed it presents a single virtual NNTP server to all your clients and cleverly pre-emptively caches group headers for popular groups.

With this installed you can ban all outgoing access from all hosts to port 119 and still allow legitimate use of USENET.

Also since you only ever download the headers one time it can equate to a huge bandwidth saving.

I think it would be a valuable addition to Astaro

    thats a good suggestion for multibox users.

    I am curious why people are suggesting that having a NNTP proxy on the firewall is differernt to any of the several other proxies that Astaro already contains?

    I admit that they may be processor/HD intensive (or at least compared to an HTTP proxy) but apart from that the arguement for a NNTP proxy is no differerent.

    Am i missing something?

    NNTP is a traffic hog big time.  Putting something like on the ASL would gie an immediate increase of cpu usage(for processing) and ram by at least 25% if not more.  NNTP is not relaly used by many enterprises that much....the ones that do have it can easily setup free linux based nntp servers(or use exchange if they so wish).

    Contrary to what some people have said here, there IS a business case for an NNTP proxy modul.

    We are a Borland Delphi shop and private NNTP servers are an important source of support and information. Web forums simply do not gives us the power of NNTP + offline news reader.

    Since ASL doesn't include an NNTP proxy, I will have to allow it to pass through the firewall.

    awww poor old usenet. played a part in the creation of the internet and now doomed in corps cause people abuse it lol

    I think we will have to disagree here william. I think that NNTP is still a valid proxy to think about as many corps still use it (but simply make the all or nothing decision) and I am certain that a large number of home users play on usenet all the time.

    But i see your arguement as valid also.

    Prior to the Version 5, we gathered the most wanted features. We asked sales, customers, partners and techs, and let that input guide us when creating the project plan. I am not the manager of the project plan, but I can not remember having seen one word of NNTP in, say, the top 30 features. 
    Maybe that will change for one of the next versions, but I don't think it is important enough for many users to make it a "most wanted" feature. There are still many things wanted more than NNTP proxying.
