ASL4 really slow - What would you do?

I've got an ASL on a 2Mb connection, if I download through the ASL either using the proxy or not I get horrific (5-6KB/sec) download speeds.

I just took the network cable out of the external nic on the Astaro box and put it into a test windows box and downloaded the same file and am getting 200+KB/sec download speeds.

So same network cable, same router, different sys but dl speeds are atrocious through the firewall.

Would it be best to scratch everything and start again on that box firewall wise, or could it be some sort of hardware problem. Its a Dell Poweredge 650 with twin Intel NIC's onboard, I've not had trouble with these machines before however it could be something screwy between the ASL install and the hardware that a reinstall might fix.

Just not looking forward to it. Backing up and restoring would be all well and good for speed however it could be something in the config causing the problem.

I guess I could do a basic install, see if the problem persists if not then restore from a backup, if the problem starts again at least I know its in the config rather than the hardware itself.

    try the tweak tester here:

    http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

    on connection type choose ethernet and see what it reccomends.  your mtu may be set to high or too low..

    Have you considered upgrading ASL?  Using a newer version might help a lot.  If that isn't an option, try some different NIC cards.

    Not from version 4 yet, v5 seems a bit OTT at the moment with some missing features and higher system requirements.

    We will eventually move to v5 I've just not had time to load it on my test firewalls (and my home one) to see what its like.

    The NIC's are in the mobo, can't change them on this box, funnily enough I've setup lots of ASL's one these machines for other companies and not had problems.

    It could be an ISP problem, and resetting the firewall does fix it as does resetting the router, however after leaving it all connected over time it slows down until I'm getting sub 56k modem speeds out of the connection.

    I've been looking at the logs and graphs and current connection reports, and it looks like the firewall isn't letting some of the connections go.

    For example one of the machines that sends through the firewall is a mail server and after a day of sending emails there are still 300+ connections showing in the connections graph and the "Current Connections" report shows lots of port 25 traffic from the mail server to outside servers with Timeouts of 4d+ (is that 4days!?) that never seem to dissapear.

    If I do a netstat on the mail server it shows no where near that number of connections so I wonder why ASL is holding them open so long.

    A netstat on the console on the firewall doesn't help, I guess its getting them from the packet filter or somewhere else.

    Its getting a bit frustrating, luckily these people have another internet connection they can use while I trouble shoot this one.

    The ISP reckons its something internal not their end. (of course)

    have you tried moving hte machine to naother inet connection?  This way you can either nail the isp or disclude them..
