you took that idea right out my head didnt your ! lol
perhaps even worth considering a tool that could aufit your hardware via the gui.. allow you to tweak model numbers etc and upload based on your license profile (since one license goes to one box).
I dont think there are any privacy issues here as its only hardware. I know a couple of other projects that do this for instance smoothwall used to do it (although its been a while since i used smoothwall due to bad bad bad support)
i dont thnk it ould be very hard to do and would give Astaro a serious amount of real world data to consider.
