General ASL Questions

Hi, we are considering giving ASL a shot.  I hear both good and bad stories.  Many report v5 as being a nightmare full of bugs waiting to be fixed.  I am wondering how many people actually use this product in a real production environment.  An environment with 200+ hosts requiring MAXIMUM uptime.   What are your experiences if so?  How stable is it?  How easy is it to manage?  If you were responsible for 100 ASL firewall appliances, would you be able to handle them with a small staff of 5-10 people?

    yes a small staff could manage that many as it is web based.  The amount of hosts you are asking for would need a powerful machine but that is within hte budget of all but the smallest businesses.  The major problems are hte virus protection and content filters.  there are a few more bugs but they are relativly minor.  The firewall itself is rock solid.  I would hazard a guess the number of installed machines is in the thousands so far..[:)]

    Just because something is web based does not mean it works well in any given environment.  What if 100 sites needed to access a host at a corporate office via VPN?  Would you still need to manually create host definitions on each firewall and ensure each of those appliances has its definitions backed up somewhere?  Sure you could create policies that encompass entire subnets, but what if that was not in accordance with your security policy?
