ASL v5.011 now unresponsive

I've had ASL running for the past month without any issues (Up2Dates and all). I use PPTP to connect to remotely administer ASL as well as my other machines behind ASL. I went into the IPS rules and tried to change an FTP rule from alert to drop and EVERYTHING stopped responding. PPTP disconnected, It doesn't route POP3 or FTP traffic, and PPTP won't reconnect. It doesn't even begin to connect. It's been like this for 30 minutes now. The thing is, I'm 300 miles from home and can't reboot the machine.
Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

    Over the weekend, I had a friend power down and restart my ASL5 machine and it still doesn't work. All this from changing an IPS alert rule to a drop rule. Would someone please look into this. If I need reinstall ASL every time I change an IPS rule type, it makes IPS a little unstable to say the least. Can anyone replicate this problem?

    I cannot replicate this on 5.011

    I set all FTP rules to drop.
    I did not reboot ASL though...

    POP3 worked, HTTP also.  I dont have PPTP configured...

    I was doing it over a VPN. Would it be too much to ask if you could try it that way?

    I can try this tonight.  Dont want to try from my work site since wife will cause issues if ASL down [:)]

    I'm so disappoined by this. I've run ASL v4 for months with no problems. I won't be home until Monday to do anything about it. Well, I'll rebuild if I have to (I've got a recent backup) and leave off the IPS functionality until I'm more satisfied that it works properly. I'll build an extra ASL box to do nothing but testing of the current version.
    I'd love to have someone duplicate this error so I know I'm not crazy.
    If I can get a console when I get home, are there any logs that would assist in documenting what happened?

    Jim, I tested over IPSEC VPN.  Bit of a pain to test via PPTP.  All worked fine.

    Your v5 install... Did you import a v4.xxx config?
    What version was the initial 5.xxx install?

    Due to the lack of postings in the IPS forum I'd think it unlikely that a current IPS bug caused this.  It could have been the upgrading from an earlier version that did it perhaps.

    I've had no problems at all with IPS.

    Strongly suggest you download 5.010 ISO and use that to rebuild the system.  5.010 most stable so far.  Up2date from that.  I think a new up2date, and *maybe* a new ISO will be out soon.

    Sorry could not replicate the error Jim.

    Thanks for trying Simon. I installed from the ISO just before 5.010. And it was a clean configuration. Not from backup. Who knows, it may be a hardware failure that coincided with the config change. I'll reload ASL on another machine I have to get up and running then re-install on the failed machine to see if I can re-create the problem.

    Well, as it turns out. It seems as though it was hardware related. I booted the machine and went into the BIOS and boothed using a detailed POST and it showed something like 198 MB RAM. It has 256. I guess the changes I made in ASL tried to use some bad memory and it flaked out on me. I guess that solves it. I wish I could afford nice new hardware with a warranty like some of the professionals here  [:)]
