V4 or V5 - that's the question (for me)...

Hi all,

i've setup ASL V5 on my local 733 MHz machine.

But now, i have to downgrade my firewall hardware, because i need the faster machine for other things.

The new machine: Pentium II 233 MHz, 320 MB RAM, 40 GB Harddisk, 2 NICs

I don't use the 'special features' of ASL (Content Filter, Antivirus, Mail protection), i just want to share and secure my internet connection for 3 users.

As i read in the documentation, the minimum requirement is a CPU of 400 MHz or greater.

I've seen that in ASL4 it's also possible to use PPPoE (I'm using German SDSL with PPPoE)

My question: Should i 'downgrade' to ASL V4 or is it possible to run ASL V5 in a sufficently and satisfyingly way ?

    Why not do a test install of v5 on the P-II machine, to see if you are happy with the result?

    Also, a P-II machine can easily be upgraded. There are faster P-II CPU cartridges than the 233 MHz one that you have. You should be able to get a 333 MHZ to 450 MHz CPU for the machine on the cheap, if you check  out used computer dealers and eBay. If your motherboard Bios is flash upgradable, flashing it with the manufacturer's newest recommended version, will generally allow you to run a much faster CPU in the slot.

    You can also get socket adapter boards that lets you put a socket 370 CPU into the slot, allowing you to use P3-500 CPUs, or P3 style Celerons with your old P-II motherboard.

    You should be able to find similar dealers on the web that are closer to you.

    of course proxy and ids/ips would be nice to have ;-)

    It's not easy to upgrade the CPU, because it's a mainboard with 66 MHz bus frequency only. But i've found a 333 MHz CPU in my computer stuff.(the fastest one i'm able to use.)

    I think i will try it with the 233 MHz CPU.
    Is it possible to change the CPU without reinstalling ASL ?

    P-II motherboards do indeed only have a 66 MHz front side bus, but you can still get quite fast CPUs that will work.

    AFAIK all Pentium II above 333 MHz require 100 MHz FSB...

    In the meantime i've searched on ebay. 
    I think it should be possible to upgrade to a celeron CPU with a Slot-1 adapter. There are CPUs up to 766 MHz with a FSB of 66 MHz available....

    Tomorrow is sunday. It's a great day to test V5 on the slow CPU ;-) 
    of course after the Formula 1 race in Monaco... ;-)

    my astaro v5 is currently running on a p 233 with intrusion detection etc and works fine. it takes 10 min until its completly up but than works without any problems. like another user wrote the ram is more important when u want to use most features

    Make sure to up2date to 5.009 to get the best results, it also solves a lot of headaches with previous releases

    i think it´ll be cheaper to buy a PIII sockel mainboard with the cpu. take a look at hardwarebundles at ebay.

    i don't think that i get a pIII board with CPU cheaper than a single Celeron CPU. There are several auctions on german ebay for celeron cpu's with socket-to-slot1 adapter for about 5-15 Euro.

    there's another small problem: It's a Siemens PC-System, the board is at ATX-Formfactor, but the connections of USB, serial and parallel are different, so i have to modify the case.

    yes you need another atx-blende (sorry, i don´t know the english description) ;-)

    p.s.: in german ebay a cpu+ the adapter sounds a little bit too cheap.

    If i have to upgrade/change my mainboard, i think i better look for another complete system...

    but i will give ASL V5 a try first

    I think i will report anything about the performance if i've tested it on my config.
