Yes, Astaro uses Linux underneath, much (but not all) of which is essentially free, but it's the dev time and expertise you pay for.... and you get what you pay for. v5 is quite new, and so is still having a couple of items ironed out, but when it reaches the stability  that v4 had (and I'm confident that it will, v4 went through a similar phase when it came out IIRC), it will rock, just like v4 does.

If, by MSISA you mean that half arsed attempt at a firewall from M$, I (personally) wouldn't put that between the worlds nasty elements and my network for all the tea in China.

....and, I'd like to add that the new intrusion detection, whilst still being ironed out, is a vast improvement. It will very much be of interest to people that, for example, want to allow access to a web server, but want protection against cmd.exe attempts, or maybe corporates that want to catch/stop people using IM clients *even if they are using tcp/80 in http mode to access the IM server* where web browsing is allowed [;)]

you just have to put a firewall in front of the MS firewall to guard against security holes in the MS firewall...

but does the Intrusion Detection also does intrusion PROTECTION?.

because an IDs system that only detects is useless(like a blank cartridge...), is the IDs able to stop the Int. attempts?

don't you insult MS ISA that much, it's a great software, we're using it at work

I actually intend to make my living "insulting" MS software..there are many free and not free alternatives to anything MS can put out....[:)]

I have installed and configured ASL v4 and v5, and I have also installed and configured Microsoft ISA on both Win2k and Win2K3 servers/

To compare them, ASL is like a new BMW. Microsoft ISA is like a old Ford Edsel.

In half an hour to one hourr, you have ASL installed, patched and configured.

Installing Windows server, and then all the patches for it, and then installing ISA, and the patches for it (and don't forget all the reboots along the way), you end up spending many hours fiddling with it. The result you get will not be as secure as ASL.

So, if you are a consultant billing your clients by the hour, Microsoft ISA is definetly a good bet, since it could make you a lot of money. However, if you want a high quality firewall that installs quickly with a minimum of bother, stick with ASL.
