Setting up a new installation based upon another..

Hi,

Our organisation currently run two Astaro v4s for the UK and US. We are setting up a new German office and will be purchasing a license for their too.

However, by now, our configurations for the existing two firewalls are quite complex so what I'm looking to do is base the new installation upon one of the existing ones. Eg. same packetfilter definitiions  etc.

Is there a way to copy these over? I'm guessing a backup would also contain licensing info correcponding to the firewalll that generated it - so would not be appropriate? 

Also, we are currently running v4 but the new installation would probably be v5. Does this limit any sort of rule transfers described above? can we still get v4 (say, an evaluation version) that we can upgrade to v5 and then purchase a proper license for?

    You'd have to check with astaro sales, but assuming you have bought a licence for the new version, i don't think restoring from a backup and then installing the new licence would be a problem.

    As far as I am aware (again), the V4 backups can now be sucessfully imported into version 5, however I would suggest against this unless you have an amazingly comlicated ruleset as a fresh install is better.

    ...if you want to go down the evaluation route, and restore the backup to version 4 before upgrading, but again, a fresh install will be better as over the past few months several bugs seem to have been fixed bya  fresh install.

    install the new version in your german office..then import one of the other backups..then install the license..[:)]

    Just keep in mind, that if you say restore the US backup into the DE firewall, the DE firewall will now have the same network configuration as the US one, so you will have to change the network definitions.

    true but i bet that is much easier for this user than recreating their setup from scratch..[:)]

    Installing a backup of another system onto a new one allways makes me a  little uneasy.

    The way i see it is that the config has to be very very  complicated and the sysadmin so pressed for time before it is worth the hassle of backing up one system to another.

    Most setups can't justify not spending several hours setting up the machine from scratch, especially if it is a production firewall that is expected to run from the word go.

    Thanks for the tips guys - in retrospect, I think we'd better go for a clean install. The rules sets - though complex - are still based on location specific network and network group definitions. So altering these could be just as much as headache as going through all the rules again.
