the complete system very, very slow

hi everyone

I installed and configured ASL 5.004 and everthing works fine in the
beginning, but after a few hours the whole system would be very very slow.
It would be so slow, that you can not connect to the internet, get
emails, connect to a ftp server ...  because you get an timeout.

I´ve running the DNS, HTTP, SOCKS and POP Proxy, without any filter or
virus scanning options. I´ve got two NAT/Masquerading settings and 6
packetfilter rules.

The LAN consist of three client, without any other server or router.

The hardware report shows that I only use 40% of the CPU, 30% of RAM
and all other less then 20%, so I think it´s not a problem of the
hardewaresystem?

And by the way, the funny thing is, the  system doesn´t work after
a reboot. ??? -So why in the beginning- ???

    An AMD K6-2 300 is pretty marginal for version 5.  This will be quite slow.  Another 256MB ram would help.

    However it sounds like you are having odd problems despite your hardware.  The system should work after a reboot.  I would check BIOS etc then do a fresh install.
