lost root password :(

I'm new to asl (v4) and I see to have lost my root password. I know what it was, and I know that I didn't intentionally change it, but what I knew it once was no longer works. From what I can gather either:
      1) I though i was on a shell on a different machine and could have changed the wrong machines password.
      2) I installed the asl power pack and that over wrote the root pw.

 I assume that anyone here can verify against thier experiences with #2, but if it was #1, does it show in any of the logs viewable via webmin (so that I can figure out what machine i meant to be changing (by time and date)  the pw on and try that one). I'm pretty sure I can recover the pass via booting it with knoppix, and it's always fun to hack it on my own, but does the asl power pack do anything like this?

    You _might_ be able to boot with the 'single' option on the lilo prompt... e.g. 'default single' or something like that; if it's setup the default way, it won't ask for a password if you do that.

    If not, go ahead and use Knoppix, or get a rescue cd distro, e.g. Alcolix or Recovery Is Possible (RIP), and boot off of it and replace the password file with one from another ASL box or a good backup or something.
    I think 4.x uses ReiserFS, btw.

    Or, re-install and restore from last good backup.

    And no, I haven't had any problems like that with the pluspack in 3.x or 4.x

    is their not an abf file what can reset the password. i thought i saw something like that.

    Bad luck in version 4, only chance would be to boot from another disk or floppy, mount partitions aso, aso.
    It is much easier to simply reinstall if you have a valid backup. In version 5 you could run a factory reset after that the firewall comes up with the standard passwort for root but even better if you connect via HTTPS it will show the initial password dialogue - hopefully you still know the admin password.
