Thanks, I'm nat able to connect to the firewall right now and wanted to know how after reading the Home/Power license changes posted today.

Just to give you an idea.  I have 6 machines always online, one working as a mail server for 5 people, and a web server (very low traffic) and two users.

My highest concurrent connections in the past year was 164.

2000 is ALOT for a home user.  If you exceed that chances are you have a very nice net connection (T3 or better) and many many users, or alot of traffic on a server.

Thanks, tank. That's what I'm after.  I guess 2000 is an awful lot.

I have an ADSL connection (1MByte) and I have 8.76 K concurrent connections !!!   I use to have several thousends in my old ASL 3.2 too, so maybe is a problem with NAT or Packet filter rules !! I have some users, but never more than 20 !!!  I have web servers, mail servers, etc. but I see several of the connections related to internal ftp servers (I have some perl processes sending little files via ftp to my servers).
I appreciate some help in this if could be a problem with the configuration.

I regularly have several thousand connections through my ASL 4.021 box. (1Mb cable, 5 users, mail server)

Its caused by users running P2P software such as eMule or Kazaa, and happens because they have very high connection timeouts (sometimes several days).

 If you have types running at once, or several of your users are running them , then the connection count can go very high.

8700 concurrent connections with less than 20 hosts is HUGE.  I don't think a misconfiguration of your packet filter/NAT rules would cause that.

I would check to make sure you don't have any of the new virus/worms that try to propagate via SMTP, etc. because they can open up large number of outbound SMTP when trying to spread.

I would also check your perl scripts to verify that they close the FTP sessions after it is finished transmitting the files.  If you are continuously leaving TCP sessions open after each small file is transfered the firewall will see thousands of concurrent connections.  I believe they won't time out for over an hour, and if your server is configured to send keep-alives, they will never close.

With mldonkey limited to 200 connections, asl will show a maximum of 800 connections. more than 200 connection will make no sense by p2p clients. netstat -s shows 250 connections established. so 2000 should be for one home user enough. But the home user are the real power user  

While it is not impossible to get high concurrent connections with few users, if you are something is terribly wrong.  P2P apps should NOT be allowed to maintain so many connections nor keep them open for so long.  If I had that many concurrent connections on a home system then I would work hard to find the cause.
