V5 useless for home users!?

Wondering why astaro doesn't just say it out loud: "We don't like home installations anymore."

While I can understand their business decisions about making everything modular for business use (i.e. they are here to make money) and charging for everything, the side effect is that products like smoothwall are beginning to look kind of attractive which is a bloody shame if you ask me.

My reasoning behind this is pretty simple:

1) No IDS for home users (And since they moved portscan here that is disabled too).
2) Already paid for antivirus for mail, but now they are going to charge again for web scanning. (And btw seems like I can have a licence for mail virus scan, but not for pattern updates... That will work great after a few months… not)
3) Spam assassin which were great in V4 is now also disabled (And this is also 
4) SMP which is a very native thing in linux is suddenly costing money. (Ok ok… I know to truly be able to use SMP programs have to be written for it, but since most proxy’s etc in astaro is opensource products this is not something astaro have to do)

So basicly were down to a linux iptables firewall with a few preconfigured proxy’s, a nice gui and some decent reporting/logging... This seems a lot like smoothwall (and it even have IDS hehehe)

Anyways enough ramblings for now... I’ll just stick to my V4 where I’m very happy with my spam filter [:)]

    Yes, I'm thinking of sticking to Ver 4 as well.  Ver 5 is too crippled for me to evaluate it well.  The price is shooting up, indeed Smoothwall is looking better. .

    Let's wait though for an official statement from Astaro.

    Well, hopefully Astaro will get all the issues with ASL 5 sorted out in the end. After all, it is clearly a product that they are betting the future of the company on. All the bugs will have to get fixed eventually, and perhaps going to 5.000 with the version numbers so soon was a bit premature. I think they should have stuck with 4.7xx beta releases until the folks on this BBS doing beta testing for them started giving them the thumbs up. So far, all I read from the users are complaints and more problem issue documentations.

    Smoothwall v2 already have some Webadmin features that ASL still lacks, such as the ability to specify max item size to be stored in the Squid proxy cache, and the ability to configure dial-up modem connections (good for backup when the broadband link goes down).

    I imagine the folks at Astaro are under quite a bit of pressure to get v5 out the door. But that could backfire on them if the new release isn't rock solid by the time they start selling it.

    Astaro, as any commercial firm would, is also looking for additional revenue streams, something that could, unless they handle it right, drive away a lot of their current home users with free ASL licenses, who populate this BBS. Generating additional revenue streams by licensing individual features, shareware based or not, is really the only option open to them, as long as they remain a single product company.
