I really think if I do not use those web proxy etc, it does not even need 1GB.

Of cos the logs take a lot of space but that can be cleared monthly.

Hope they would remove or lower the HDD requirement to maybe 2GB.

Stick to 4.x for now...the 2.5GB still have tons of spaces left unused.

If I go and buy a HDD now, it would at least be 20GB....nah.. even with 20GB, I won't use that much as P166 is too slow to run as http proxy etc....upgrade to new machine....hmmm...

the manual says 8 i tried 4.3 and it said too small..6.4 it likes..and yes it logs tons due to security certs they are trying for..[:)] 

I use a P5-166 as my home webserver & squid proxy... works fine.
140MB RAM, btw.

Currently running ASL on P5-200 64MB (too little ram for squid); planning on upgrading to 5 w/ a newer computer I have laying around.

I really hope Astaro reads this and set the min requirement of HDD to just 2GB or even 1.5GB in their final release.

For those who installed ASL 5, can you post what is the total HDD needed for the installation?

Really does not wish to buy a 10GB HDD just to use V5 when my current 2.5GB is not even used fully.

I think the program just needs 500MB for basic installation and maybe another 500MB for logs etc. Of cos those who use proxy etc need a lot more but by having the HDD limitation, even people like us who use it only as firewall must go get such a big HDD.

As for RAM 128MB is more than enough, currently on V4, it uses less than 70MB.

There is no way the minimum HDD will drop to 2GB or less.  The minimum hard drive size has been 8GB for at least 2 years. 

 

Yes it is 8GB on paper but during installation of V4, I goes thru with a 2GB and 2.5GB HDD.

I just hope ine V5, they won't force it to be at least 8GB as some home users simply does not use that much.
My current 2.5GB HDD still have lot os free space because I only use it as a Firewall and POP3 AV scanning. HTTP Proxy on this machine with this old HDD is too slow.

Also sometime it is purely for testing, with this force check of HDD, testing also require a big HDD.

I think the minimum at the moment is about 6GB if you try and install.

I can't see this being reduced.

Cheap cheap 20GB HDD's are easily found. 

There is no point in astaro doing this.  Hard disk space these days is so cheap.  You can pick up a 10GB HD from ebay for about £20 or less.  Buy a new disk.  You are getting a fully featured firewall for free.  Therefore buying a new hard drive is the least you can do.  Most other firewall products always quote big HD spaces, if nothing else to cover potential logfile space  

A 6.4 GB hard drive and 128 MB RAM is pretty well minimum. Ideally, you ought to have 256 MB RAM for ASL v5.

The machine you describe, with a 2.5 GB hard drive, is really only suitable to run Windows 98 or Windows NT 4 workstation on. All the newer OS releases will require more space than that.  Hard disks have been getting cheaper every year. You should be able to pick up a used 10 GB drive for around $20.
